Nonstate actors in the Human Rights Universe
Nonstate actors in the Human Rights Universe
It's a fantastic book, rather like a series of essays more than a flowing prose. It raises serious points about the current condition of the Decleration of Human Rights, and offers a thorough thesis on how to address current problems in the promotion of Human Rights. As the current Bill was created to provide the protection of human beings in a post-war world, it's incredibly statist. And while it's functional and relevant, it fails to preticipate today's world of globalisation. In modern times, a significant amount of violations are committed by transnational organizations and companies. And while the decleration protects citizens from the state, it's inadaquete in resolving violations committed by non-state actors from abuse in the family home, and as previously mentioned, czars of the trading world.

Re: Nonstate actors in the Human Rights Universe
Where are you, Lozzer? We, in Oz, don't even have a Bill of Rights. A couple of rights are in our constitution (freedom of religion is one, as is the right/obligation to vote). Last year widespread community consultations were staged by the government, but the findings were basically ignored. I made a submission after hosting a political night to find out what locals in the area wanted regarding the shape and content of protection for human rights. We were mainly in favour of bill of rights, though one person wanted an act of parliament, like in the UK (I think). Our gov has said outright that we can't have a bill of rights - maybe they'd consider an act of parliament, but basically, rights here are pretty low down the political agenda :I-love-pork:

They don't want to enshrine our rights so they can take them away.

...but now you're implying they can't take them away if they don't enshrine them.
Which is technically correct, there's nothing to take.
