The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

The second guy? No idea where his surname starts.
It starts with the "du", IIRC. He's not the person I'm after.
Never did get the answer to this one?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_Spicer-Simson
Spicer-Simson was given command of an expedition to attack the German naval forces on Lake Tanganyika.
According to the historian and writer Giles Foden he was noted as rather eccentric—for instance, he often wore a grass skirt and occasionally a self made white canvas skirt, whilst in command of his flotilla and insisted that an Admiral's flag be flown outside his mud hut.

Not the one I'm thinking of. This chap was on the bridge of a major warship, not a canoe.

I thought you were referring to a ship of the American Great White Fleet, some of which fought in WW2 and perhaps were fired upon by Japanese aircraft prior to being decommisssioned.

I will re-read the question. I thought the Great White Fleet was what Roosevelt put together to show that the US had a big.....stick....

EDIT: Oops...sorry...I did it again....I failed to notice that this thread has progressed beyond the OP....

My bad...

Carry on.... :leave:
