Play phrases you used as a kid

Post by Rum » Wed Jun 16, 2010 8:49 am

Can you remember phrases you used in games as a kid? Things like 'olly olly olsen free', which I think meant the game was over, the rules no longer applied and everyone could come back to 'base'. There were all sorts and sometimes how you were supposed to say them was unclear..and possibly what they meant too!

Can you remember any?

When I moved ot N Wales from Manchester (at age 10) I was introduced to a version of Hide & Seek called Blocky that was fantastic. Basically the base where the person who did the counting was was the base and after everyone had hid when the seeker started to look for people you could run back to the base, touch it, shout "Blocky El" and you were free from being "it" / the seeker for the next game.. it was so much fun - we had a old primary school in Wales that had a maze of places to hide. i can recall many times running at full speed to beat the seeker back to the base...

That was a fun game.. sometimes i think back and think I'd love to play something like that again...

I loved school.. those days were the best

"You're a bummer!"

We used to say that to each other all the time as kids... we didn't mean it in the American sense either. I'm not sure what we meant though, as I didn't know what bumming was.

When we used to play armies/team hide and seek etc. Olly Olly Oxen Free was our secret codeword to give the all clear

We also used to play the game that Ele is talking about but I can't remember what it was called, something like TouchBase Free We used to play it on an Industrial Estate which likewise had a lot of cool places to hide!

We also used to play a game called Sticky Toffee, which is basically freeze tag, It would start with all of the players holding onto a finger of the person who was "It" they would then say "I went to the shops and bought some stickyyyy.......stickyyyy...Bacon/Toilet roll/Salt and Vinegar crisps" when they eventually said "stickyyyy.....stickyyyy...TOFFEE" you'd have to leg it away from everyone to avoid being frozen.

I would gladly play all of these games again now, If I could only rope in some other "adults" to join me

We used to play that too. But we had a different name for it and I can't remember what it was. I used to be brilliant at hiding. I would always come up with original places to hide. One time I hid by going between two houses and climbing up between them with my arms and legs spread out putting pressure on the walls then when I reached the top, at the apex of the roof between two-story houses, I then changed position to having my back against one wall and my feet pushing against the other holding me firmly in place. I was able to see the guy who was counting against a lamp-post on the path in front of the house.
My aul one would've killed me if she had've caught me :hehe:

Shit.... we used to play that game too.... like a cross between hide and seek and tag. I can't remember what it was called either.

My Gran and Grandad used to live in a flat joined to our house and there was a dark corridor leading to it. I used to do the same and watch my parents and sister walking about 6 feet below me. The walls were plasterboard: I'm surprised I didn't go through!

Our version of that was just called "hide and seek" but when you got back to base, you yelled "One two three weep <your name>" to tell everyone else you were home and safe. I think the last time I played it, I recall the seeker was leaning against a lamppost, counting, so I just stood completely silently behind her until the count was up, reached over her shoulder and called myself out. Fright of her life! And slightly creepy now I think of it. :?

It's amazing how easily you can do it as a child compared to an adult. I often stayed up there for hours after that with my friend. His mother would walk around the side entrance below us. If she had've looked up there would've been murder.

I was thinking of taking up climbing myself. I need to get back in shape. My metabolism has dropped since becoming around 31 and I've put on 2 stone. I used to be the type that could eat and eat and I wouldn't put on a thing. A few people suggest doing weights but I find them boring. There's a climbing wall place in the city. I'm going to look into it. I wish there was somewhere that had a course you could run similar to Gladiators or Ninja Warrior. I'll probably make use of the beach and take up jogging too.

If you have a wall, go for it. It's fucking brilliant and some of the ladies are well worth looking at. Er, so are some of the guys.
