Help! Football cheer for freethinker team - needed FAST!

For (slightly) serious discussion of things involving balls and a lot of effort (that aren't sex!)

Help! Football cheer for freethinker team - needed FAST!

Post by Ronja » Thu Jun 10, 2010 10:29 am

I have just agreed to make a rather light-hearted radio interview/game "against" the new Lutheran Bishop in Finland (the first female such, see this thread for details: http://rationalia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=12872 ). It will air on Monday on our Swedish-language youth channel Radio Xtreme, my part taped, hers live.

The theme is, of all things, football. I have managed to think up hopefully-not-too-stupid answers to all the other questions in the game scenario (freethinkers vs. church team), but I cannot for the life of me come up with a cheering chant for either team.

The journalist is gonna call within the next half hour. :helpme:
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." - Maureen J

Dev - those don't rhyme. Gotta rhyme to cheer!

So far I've managed this:

"Think free, think wide!
Realism on our side!"

and

"Kick with faith, pass with soul!
We will shoot the winning goal!"

Lame, yeah, but a start...

I'm also going to claim that all supporters, regardless of side, will be drinking beer. But the variation in beer labels and types will be greater on the freethinker side.

Not at all - those sort of chants are used in English stadiums every week.

Next one for freethinkers:

"Free to think, keen to play!
This will be our big day!"

...marginally better, maybe.

<deep breath> - it's over, and went pretty OK (I think), even though the kids' friends ringed the doorbell in the middle of that telephone call.

The final version of the freethinker chant was this:

"Free to think, keen to play -
realism wins today!"

I claimed that the shorter the training time, the more likely the church team would be to win, and vice versa. Partly because the opposition towards something so "silly" or "not comme-il-faut" as football would be strong in the freethinker community in the beginning but mellow out, because we are free even to play football, if we so choose. In the "church camp" the opposition would start slower but gain more momentum and stay strong longer, which might affect the team.

I proposed that the church team would want to wear (Lutheran) liturgical colors, and because South Africa is hot, white and green would be the most practical - Lutherans are generally know for being fairly practical, also in many questions of faith and religious life. Their logo, worn over the heart, would of course be the cross. The freethinkers would have a hard time agreeing on common symbols, but might settle for Prometheus' fire, i.e. a stylistic flame, and the shirt color could then be yellow - the lightest color of fire (and decidedly not a liturgical color).

There were two more questions, about who would be a suitable coach for each team and what the coaching/training philosophy should be, and about where each team would find strength if they were one goal down and there were only two minutes of the game left. Any good guesses what I answered? ;)

Ah, I forgot one crucial detail in my panic: this game would be a part of the football world cup / championship (what is it called for real? I'm totally football-illiterate) in South Africa. So I boldly claimed that the chants would need to be internationally understandable and therefore in English.
