I tend to think of people as their usernames if they are even remotely like "real" names (and of course if their usernames actually are their real names) - I think of XC, Rum, Tat, Exi, Ani, Dev, DP, LP, Tig, and the like with those names, while people like pawiz (who can even pronounce that stupid thing?!) or the Dawktor it's easier to think of them as their real names. Usually usernames get shortened for familiarity and expediency, so often it's the former.

It's funny with Ani coz he hates being called that in person. I rarely think of LP as LP now, same with Elessarina, XC, Zilla, Feck and almost everyone I've met. the exceptions are, Ashton, Pappa and you.
