Re: The UK election thread
This seems a lot more exciting than US politics.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Re: The UK election thread
I am surprised to hear you say that. American elections seem to me to be on a massive scale compared to our little amateurish efforts. I am also often touched by the naive faith a lot of Americans seem to have in the democratic process..and I don't mean to be insulting when I say that.Pluto2 wrote:This seems a lot more exciting than US politics.

I think its because there are more people who are running for election than we have and there are more seats to fill. Also I know almost nothing about UK elections and parliament which makes it more fun to read about.Rum wrote:I am surprised to hear you say that. As for americans having faith in the democratic process. We don't really IMHO, but there isn't any other way to elect someone here. Most people just vote for the guy who seems to be the least crazy.

Re: The UK election thread
Tories need 58 of the final 100 seats to win a majority...
EDIT: They need 40 from 52, looking like this parliament will be well hung.

The likes of me, whose work depends on what the Govt tell us to do as policy are going to be twiddling our fingers for a good while!RuleBritannia wrote:Tories need 58 of the final 100 seats to win a majority...

Re: The UK election thread
Even with Labour's illegal war in Iraq, an unelected PM, the MPs expenses scandal, the banking crisis and recession, the Tories still can't win an election. I think Thatcher's legacy remains in people's heads.

Woo go Brighton! First Green MP!
It's a shame that the Lib Dems haven't done better - but a hung parliament should be good for them either way. Perhaps we'll get PR next time and our votes will actually count for something.

Yeah, when you put it like that, they actually haven't dove very well, have they?RuleBritannia wrote:Even with Labour's illegal war in Iraq, an unelected PM, the MPs expenses scandal, the banking crisis and recession, the Tories still can't win an election. [Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

It's official, we have a hung parliament, only 35 contituencies left to be announced with the Tories needing 36 seats for a majority. Which means Gordon Brown is still the Prime Minister, and will be asked by the Queen to form a government.

And so it all depends on horse-trading with the Lib-Dems...RuleBritannia wrote:It's official, we have a hung parliament, only 35 contituencies left to be announced with the Tories needing 36 seats for a majority. (old style Whigs from 2 centuries ago should be rotating in their graves at a fairly high RPM...)

My FB status this morning -
Well done Scotland! We confused the hell out of the beeb last night, but it was pretty clear what the message was - we'll forgo lib/snp leanings to give a big two fingers to the tories every time.
I do worry what this will mean regards independence referendum, but that's for another day. Today is "omigawds who will be kingmaker?!" *bites nails*
