It's been out for a while, but I hadn't spotted it till recently. Only read a little, so far - I have it at school, to have something to read at lunchtime. I like his writing style...

Just finished it, actually. Fantastic stuff about macroeconomics, demography, geopolitical trends, understanding the world today through the next couple decades, etc.

I'm undecided. I tried reading On the Road, and I'm not really feeling Kerouac's prose. He comes off as high or drunk and he makes mistakes that beginning writers tend to make.
I also checked out Dune, and while I like the movie, I find the book a bit dull.

I liked reading Kerouac when I was in my twenties, and frequently stoned.

I love the subject-matter, but the prose makes it unbearable to read.

I'll probably give it another go when I'm feeling more patient, but right now, I can't stand it.

I'm reading Again, Dangerous Visions, the sf (or speculative fiction, as he prefers to call it)collection edited by Harlan Ellison. As with the first volume, I think many of the stories are rubbish. There was one particular story however that has always stuck in my head since reading these books many years ago. I started in on it last night. It's a novella called The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K LeGuin. I think it's really very good, an engaging read. I wish the film Avatar (similar theme here) had a story like his to match it's visuals.

Only a couple of hundred pages in so far, but intriguing, funny and rich. I haven't read any of his books before but I may have to after this.

much fun especially for pilots but good reading for all.

Blew threw this on the laptop - very enjoyable after watching the HBO series. Fleshed out some of the events and characters - especially Winters.

If you are a sci-fi fantasy fan and have NOT read Robin Hobbs....you are missing a treat. The world she envisions fleshes out with each novel.
The Fool who figures in the first 9 interwoven novels is one of THE most memorable characters in fantasy.

Hobb is breaking very interesting ground in sexuality in sci-fi/fantasy....and being egnimatic about it.
Hell she's even exploring trans-species and morphism..

You will not likely be disappointed but do start at the beginning with the Farseer Trilogy.

I only found that series a year or so ago - absolutely brilliant! I was going to re-read them recently, only to find that my beloved daughter has "borrowed" them...

About 50 pages into Breaking The Spell. I have a huge amount of respect for Dennett and his take on the 'new atheism' is, so far, the best thought out of the unholy triumvirate (the others being Dawkins' TGD and Hitchens' GING.) I am hoping he keeps up the standard for the other 350 pages!
