The Pacific

Just finished watching The Pacific on Sky Anytime. I was impressed, but somehow it didn't feel quite up to Band of Brothers. Anyone else seen it?

Seen up to part IV.

I think its a slow burner. I like it, so far. But it's not having the same impact as BoB. Probably because I studied Op Overlord in quite a bit of detail, but my knowledge of the Pacific Theatre is lacking somewhat.

It seems to take a micro focus on a few characters rather than the wider canvas of BoB. The filming is also more..er..'classical' and less of the grainy realism of Private Ryan to my way of thinking. Will watch more!

Having said that, the concentration camp episode of BoB (quite a non-battle one), still is some of the most moving TV I've ever seen.
I wept the first time I watched it and it STILL brings a lump to my throat.

Part of that is down to the way the Pacific campaign was fought. If a unit fought in the battle for one island, then they would generally take a rest while someone else fought the next battle, before coming back into the front line, and so on. In contrast, the men featured in BoB fought almost continuously from D-Day to VE-Day. But reading the episode list, it does look odd. It focuses on just a few key battles, skipping others that would have been equally deserving. Guadalcanal gets three episodes - fair enough. Bet Peleliu also gets three episodes, while Tarawa / Saipan /Guam have none at all, and there is just one each for Iwo Jima and Okinawa ... I can't figure that one out. :dono:

Not having Sky Movies (and I'm certainly not going to subscribe to it for this alone), I won't get to see it for some time. Selling the UK rights to Sky as opposed to the BBC means that the series will only get a tiny fraction of the audience in the UK and Ireland that BoB would have got. I suppose if it nets more money in the short term ...

Haven't seen it yet but looking forward to it - anyone know if it's available for streaming online anywhere yet?

I've seen one episode of The Pacific, and haven't gone back for more. I'm meh about it.

The first episode didn't do much for me, but I'm going to see the other episodes anyway.
