born-again atheist and Seraph, You guys make it sound like being an intellectual is some sort of big deal. From what I've seen from knowing self-proclaimed intellectuals, department heads at major universities, mensa members, so-called clear thinkers (i.e. Richard Dawkins) etc., there are very few things more over-rated than being an intellectual.

An intellectual? Isn't that somebody who knows a lot about specific subjects and fakes being smart in the rest of his/her life? Anybody who is impressed by being an intellectual or thinks they are one is probably going to be the biggest bore in the room at not very interesting cocktail parties.

No.

Cocktail parties aren't interesting anyway.

Oscar Wilde knew how to handle cocktail parties. LaMont Cranston resembles Oscar Wilde the way the Duke of Earl resembles the Duke of Edinburgh.

RuleBritannia, We have found something else upon which we agree, that cocktail parties aren't very interesting. However, there are some people in some fields (i.e. academia, business, etc.) who are virtually compelled to attend a certain number of cocktail parties and appear interesting and oh-so-smart. It's all about furthering one's chosen career, something even intellectuals must do.

Another way to put it to those who are impressed with their massive intellects is "If you're so fucking smart, why ain't you rich?"

Surendra, That comment about the Duke of Earl was, by far, the most intelligent and interesting insight I've seen you make on several forums. Yes, "Duke of Earl," by Gene Chandler, a great song to drink and dance to with a sweet young thing. However, Gene Chandler really doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as James Brown, "The Godfather of Soul," Sam Cooke and some others. When it comes down to it, I'd take "When a Man Loves a Woman," by Percy Sledge, over "Duke of Earl," for those R&B singers who had rather limited careers.

The fact is that people who are independently wealthy are not looking to the internet to entertain themselves. That includes you.

All those artists have something by which to recommend themselves, or else their names would no longer be mentioned. How can you say that James Brown somehow exceeds Gene Chandler? In what dimension are you imagining this?

You didn't respond to my bringing up Sonny Liston as the embodiment of evil, in a thread dedicated to good and evil. How could you? Probably because you don't recognise that an internet forum is a serialised simulation of a cocktail party.

Don't laugh. LaMont Cranston and The Duke of Earl both are fictively sophisticated fictional characters. Meanwhile, Oscar Wilde has much cleverer things to say than does the Duke of Edinburgh. And has more fun into the bargain.
