ANKARA (AFP) – A strong earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale shook eastern Turkey early Monday, media reports and officials said.
The quake struck at 04:32 am (0232 GMT) with an epicentre near the Karakocan town in Elazig province, the Istanbul-based Kandilli observatory said on its web site.
The Anatolia news agency quoted the governor of Elazig, Muammer Erol, as saying that they had so far received reports of a house damaged in a village.
Deadly earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, which is crossed by several active fault-lines. Two powerful tremors in the heavily populated northwest claimed about 20,000 lives in August and November 1999.

Great if that's all ... the damage sounds pretty light for such a quake? The Anatolia news agency quoted the governor of Elazig, Muammer Erol, as saying that they had so far received reports of a house damaged in a village.

Is this the 3rd or the 4th earthquake to happen in the last week?
"Another aspect of the particulateness of the gene is that is does not grow senile; it is no more likely to die when it is a million years old than when it is only a hundred. It leaps from body to body in it's own way and for its own ends, abandoning a succession of mortal bodies before they sink in senility and death" -Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene p.34

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Re: Report: Strong quake hits eastern Turkey
According to Wikipedia an earthquake of magnitude 6.0-6.9 on the Richter scale (such as this one in Turkey) occurs every 3.04 days (120 per year). Earthquakes under 6.0 on the Richter scale occur every 0.005 days (65,000 per year or 1250 per week). So only having only 3 or 4 earthquakes this week would be very unusual.Ameri Boi wrote:Is this the 3rd or the 4th earthquake to happen in the last week?

Actually the number of big earthquakes is not rising. A nice summary can be found here. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ ... qstats.phpValden wrote:Another one.![]()
