The crowd noises for the massed armies in Return of the King were recorded at a rugby match (Wellington v Southland) which I attended. They asked the crowd to stay behind, and most of us did. Half the crowd was probably only there for the recording, probably.

The Oscars aren't about awarding the best films. Hardly anything worth nominating is ever nominated. I mean, ffs, almost ever single film in every single category is an American Hollywood film. If they want to have the Oscars as an award ceremony for American filmmaking, fine, but that's clearly not the case since non-American films do occasionally get nominated. They only award American films because they're concerned with popularity among American audiences, not the films' actual worth. The Oscars exist because every Tom, Dick and Harry loves to hold Oscar parties and bet on their favourite films to win in the office pool. It exists because every clueless asshole watches it and it makes ad revenue. Which is fine, I suppose. It's no worse than most television. But let's not be mistaken: the actual awards are meaningless.

I thought that was at a cricket match. Or maybe that time was for the first of the LOTR films.
