My indoors get grass regularly. (Not that kind, the boring kind.)Animavore wrote:You should probably also feed the cats veggies.Gawdzilla wrote:They love this "all or nothing" kind of argument. One of my dogs and the cat are both rescues...the cat just showed up one day, and sort of moved in.Gawdzilla wrote: They love this "all or nothing" kind of argument. I think they already own the house, or at least they own 2/3 of the couch and 8/10 of the bed.
I know who is enslaved here, and it's not them.

Re: PETA
Most people volunteer to care for their animals, and many of those make significant sacrifices to maintain them. PETA extremist ignore that.elettaria wrote:One of my dogs and the cat are both rescues...the cat just showed up one day, and sort of moved in.Gawdzilla wrote: They love this "all or nothing" kind of argument. Yeah, you shouldn't enslave cats and dogs. They should be free to wander the streets and starve to death.elettaria wrote:I had a huge argument with someone supposedly with PETA last week, telling me I'm enslaving my dogs and my cat by making them into domestic pets. Re: PETA
We had a huge flood here in '07. I fed a few dozen cats and dogs for weeks after that, all of them with no collars. People who leave their pets behind deserve a special hell. (There were a few animals with collars and those that were socialized enough to be caught were taken to a no-kill near here.)heyzeus wrote:Yeah, you shouldn't enslave cats and dogs. They overlook the fact that with the exception of the few wild places left on the planet nearly all animals are domesticated and 'systemic' - i.e symbiotic to some extent with human beings. Dogs evolution (and later selective breeding) makes them pretty well totally symbiotic with human beings. They learn to respond to human facial movements innately for example.
Cats. Well we can all fuck right off as far as they are concerned I guess.

I've a feeling (and I could be wrong) that most PETA members are creationists, so "dog evolution" would mean diddly-squat to them.Rum wrote:They overlook the fact that with the exception of the few wild places left on the planet nearly all animals are domesticated and 'systemic' - i.e symbiotic to some extent with human beings. Re: PETA
I do not support PETA's present methods or position. However, I give Peta huge credit for bringing the issue of Cruelty to Animals to the public's awareness, which is something I think the Humane Society and other organizations failed at.
Peta also produces some pretty compelling ad campaigns.

Pretty manipulative ad campaigns on par with anti-abortionists.maiforpeace wrote: Peta also produces some pretty compelling ad campaigns.

Re: PETA
Story in the press here today which is appropriate to link to. Lawyers for animals..
at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8554012.stm
Switzerland referendum on providing lawyers for animals
A nationwide referendum is taking place in Switzerland on a proposal to give animals the constitutional right to be represented in court. Animal rights groups say appointing state-funded animal lawyers would ensure animal welfare laws are upheld, and help prevent cases of cruelty.
Opponents say Switzerland does not need more legislation regarding animal protection.
The Swiss government has recommended that voters reject the idea.
There is already one animal lawyer in Switzerland. Zurich has made legal representation for animals in cruelty cases compulsory since 1992. The current incumbent is Antoine Goetschel. He has gone to court on behalf dogs, cats, cows, sheep, and even a fish.
He believes speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves is the essence of justice.
"For me the animals are one of the weakest parts in society and they need to be better protected.
"So, it's kind of a fight for a minority that needs to be supported. And to make legislation more respectful towards humans and animals as a whole."
But Switzerland has very strict animal welfare laws, and the Swiss government, conscious that the taxpayer would have to pay the fees for a nationwide system of animal lawyers, has recommended voters reject the idea. And there is opposition from Switzerland's powerful farming lobby.
Struggling with reduced subsidies and falling milk prices, Swiss farmers say animal lawyers would simply add another layer of bureaucracy to a system already overburdened with animal protection legislation.

This site is a bit one-sided but it gives an insight into the less publicised aspects of PETA's operations.
At least I'm housebroken.
