Plus it took Bendy Kingsley about 5 seconds to convince Di Craprio that it was all his own delusion. I know I'd take more convincing than that.

Yeah, but it didn't stick, so I wasn't bothered by that. I used to listen to some pretty strange stuff when I was volunteering at the half-way house.

They told him that he had "come around" several times before but that it had never "stuck" and this was his last chance before they plow into his frontal lobe.

Yeah, he had a history of "surfacing", so one more time wasn't surprising.

Another thing that annoyed me was the "Veteran goes crazy" theme. FFS, it's as old as the postal worker jokes.

Well, it wasn't his military service which drove him to insanity. It was the guilty he felt for the death of his wife and children. Which actually makes all those military flashbacks irrelevant.

In the book it is strongly implied at the end that his final regression is faked so that he will get the lobotomy and forget about killing his wife. I haven't seen the film but it sounds like that doesn't come across well from what I am hearing here.

If they did not include that, then they would not have had the scene where the German camp commandant had his face blown off - and you need blown off faces to keep a movie audience entertained.

It isn't in the film at all. His final regression is just a regression.

There's ZERO motivation for that in the movie.

"Of course he went crazy, you'd do the same if you'd experienced that . . ." (paraphrased). The Dachau scenes were supposed to be contributory to his insanity, part of the stressors that allowed him to go insane when he hit a crisis. It suggests that he wasn't so weak he'd go insane just because his entire family is dead.
