The Uber Tim Burton Film Thread

Post by Mishakal » Sun Feb 28, 2010 7:47 am

For fans of the many wonderful works of Tim Burton like myself, here is the Rationalia appreciation thread for this god among film directors!

The first Tim Burton film I ever saw was the Nightmare Before Christmas when I was a kid, I have been hooked ever since, between Beetlejuice, Mars Attacks!, his two Batman remakes, Sleepy Hollow, the Corpsebride, and even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I have found his movies to be worth box office ticket prices. Though I have never gotten around to seeing Big Fish,

Now I eagerly await his take on one of my favorite childhood books, Alice in Wonderland... I can't wait!!!

I strongly recommend seeing Big Fish. And Beetle Juice. And Edward Scissorhands.

In order of awesomeness:

Nightmare Before Christmas
Big Fish
Beetle Juice
Batman
Edward Scissorhands
Batman Returns
Corpse Bride
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Planet of the Apes

And PeeWee's Big Adventure fits in there somewhere...though that one's just too random to place.

Still haven't seen Mars Attacks!

I'm a pretty big fan of Elfman's scoring, as well.

Big Fish is ok... but not much better than that. I'm a great fan of his films, the first I saw was probably Batman. The film that really captures what he's about and is the best example of what he's always been trying to do with film is definitely Edward Scissorhands. The film is a pure piece of cinema poetry. He has am amazing ability to create fairytales that are dark and wonderful. It's not just him alone though, he's been lucky to work with some of the best actors too. Apparently, he's a very quiet director, not giving a great deal of prompting about what he wants the actors to do, perhaps that's why he often keeps working with the same people... they know what he wants intuitively because they've know his mind.

I can't wait to see Alice too. Are you still planning on getting some Alice in Wonderland tattoos Mish?

The one I'm getting next is a version of the Peacock Angel (or Melek Taus to those familiar with Yazid mythology), but an Alice in Wonderland tat I was thinking I would get either the Catterpillar or the Cheshire Cat or a simple 10/6 symbol.

I haven't seen Edward Scissorhands in a while.. I'll rewatch it soon, but I do recomend watching Mars Attacks! It's pure gold and not enough people appreciate it!

I'm not too keen on the 3D revolution in general...and the fact that Burton's adaptation seems to be taking a lot from McGee's interpretation. But ignoring that, I too am excited.

And I revise my list. Big Fish is the best Burton movie. Just rewatched it.

I will try and find a showing of it not in 3D. I appreciate that it is done well, but I hate the way things look blurry when they move at speed, or the headaches you get when you try and focus on something not in focus.

I love Tim Burton, and can't wait for his version of Alice.

The only film of his, that I have watched and didn't like is Mars Attacks.

My favorite has to be Nightmare Before Christmas with Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands together in second place. I loved Corpse Bride, I thought it was one of his best.

Anyone's read his book, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and other stories? If not, you should.

Mars Attacks! is one of the greatest films of all time, I can't see why it's not more popular. Maybe the humour's a little odd for mainstream audiences, half subtle, half over the top... dunno?

I notice a couple of people saying A Nightmare Before Christmas.
This is a Henry Selick film. Burton produced it.

Anyway, my deepest fears of AIW have been confirmed (as usual my nose for films is correct).

From what I can tell from critical reception, the film is incredibly shallow and boring. The only reason to watch it is for the visuals.

Ironically, Burton is not completely to fault here. Sure, it's his fault for accepting to direct such a poorly written film, but a large portion of the guilt lies with Linda Woolverton, who wrote the screenplays for Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, and now this POS. What used to be a whimsical tour through esoterically political dream sequences has now been tied into a rationalized, good and evil Narnia/Oz clone. Instead of passively wandering from one oddity to the next and pondering WTF could it all mean, Alice is now a conflicted pre-wommon who must slay the Jabberwocky-beast of chauvinism (which, btw, isn't even the beast's name--it's Jabberwock). The whole film wreaks of misplaced feminist angst and overused plot devices.

And, because I'm a pseudo film soundtrack buff, the score is terribly uninspired. I miss the old Elfman.

I'm still going to go see it, but to avoid disappointment, I can't expect anything more of it than pretty art direction.
