I couldn't believe when I first heard, first saw when I read Peter Harrison's blog, can't figure out why it hasn't been made more of. I immediately thought and posted somewhere that that did not bode well for this ending positively. You don't dedicate a book at all lightly, Dawkins only has what, 10 books? You still have a lot of family etc, before you start grasping for lessor sorts, so Josh must be very important to him

Pederasty perhaps? Puts a new spin on that essay where Dawkins railed against monogamy.

I think it more aptly describes a sexualized mentor/apprentice relationship between an obviously older man and a much younger man. The age difference need merely be a stark one, because notions of what constitutes a "boy" and a "man" change over time. Considering Josh is a good 40 years Richard's junior, the label "pederasty" could arguably be applied.

Err... it's an apology, but it does not take away the fact that he ought to have fully assess the situation prior to posting the "Outrage" letter. Not very fucking rational for a very fucking scientific man. That and the fact that he is still clearly out of touch, ie: Josh is still put on a pedestal. There are users both here and on the old RDF that could run the site far better then Josh has, is, and could do.

Thank you for showing a bit of maturity about the whole fiasco but, Richard, you sound like you're apologizing like a politician.

A few hundred years ago it was simply one of those things a Gentleman did. Though what happened then and what happens in modern day Afghanistan is a little different, which has nothing to do with the insinuated possible relationship between Josh and Richard, so I've just be leaving now...

Though Richard's apology is welcomed, I have to agree with klr and NineBerry in the strongest possible terms. Richard has heaped praise on Josh to almost frightening levels, even dedicating his latest book (which I bought!) to him, on a page which maybe I'll now rip out.
