Re: Refugees: A request
Oddly enough I'm not overly emotional about that little recent event, RL concerns perhaps.
As far as this wee place is concerned, I think it's my kind of asylum.
And I've yet to stretch my legs and explore as it were. Whatever happens, I've found something towards meeting my forum fix.
Cheers

Whilst I agree we should tone down the invective some, I do note that Richard continues to keep his own quote mine laden emotional outburst at the top of his own forums, and to that end I'm certainly not going to shut up about all this.
The irony is that his own forums taught me to realise how pathetic his argument is. Had someone come to the forums and tried to present an argument like that against RD they would have been roasted over the fires of facts and reason. It's telling that it has to be locked to prevent any members replying with the actual truth. Smells like something banaman or Ken Ham would do, not the good Professor.

Re: Refugees: A request
I completely understand your thoughts, but just one little thing. We are guests (invited yes) in this nice place and I think we have made quite a few people a little uncomfy. I'd hate to think we alienate people from their own forum while we vent our own frustrations (which are justified)... but we should be kind towards our gracious hosts and try to keep a little rational about this.
Besides, if we can be more clear headed than Richard has recently been, and approach this with rational well thought out posts, then we show ourselves for the intelligent wonderful people we are. Their loss

I've already donated to the upkeep of the servers here inorder that I don't feel that I'm completely taking the piss, my comment was more a general one with reference to other blogs and forums I've been trying to disseminate the true facts at.
We and more importantly the mods have been done a huge disservice, first by Josh and Andrew, and now more significantly by Richard Dawkins himself on the front page of the forums that were so useful, informative and vibrant for so long.
I for one, refuse to go quietly into the night, but I will do anything and everything to ensure the least disruption possible for the members here whose house was so graciously offered in our time of need, and which we need to be careful not to take over as if we own the place.

As someone who has felt just a little bit overwhelmed by the the incoming crowd, please can I just say thank-you to everyone who has commented in this thread (and on similar subjects elsewhere). It's reassuring for us old-timers, and I for one am grateful for the sentiments expressed. I hope that as many as want to will find a home here!

Hack, can I suggest you talk to Simon Gardner about this? I think he might have some ideas...hackenslash wrote: Enough venting has been done, and we should now begin to focus on what we do next, and how we go about it.

I wanted to start a forum anyways, didn't really expect this to happen thoughHughMcB wrote:Hack, whats our best option here? Starting our own forum?
Does anyone have any ideas?
I'd volunteer for an admin, I'm not good at moderation though.
I'll set up one in a couple of mins, see if anyone wants to sign up

Re: Refugees: A request
Well it’s not complex. But also may or may not be achievable. My view for some days has been that we need to start looking for some source of alternative funding (I’m thinking rich atheist benefactor) and just start the whole thing up again as soon as funds permit.Nora_Leonard wrote:Hack, can I suggest you talk to Simon Gardner about this? If a new site is set up I expect I will follow, but the main draw of the Dawkins forum was the theist nut jobs...
Whatever happens I feel I've found a new home here too, me likey
Thankyou for having us, for letting us descend on you in large numbers at short notice, thankyou for being so welcoming

Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

Re: Refugees: A request
You bet... and besides... who knows if HE actually did it in the first place. Maybe it was found and presented to him? Who knows.... If he had looked properly he would have seen more than just insults. But then... perhaps once you're in a certain frame of mind all you see is the bad stuff. I'd like to think a person of science is able to be more objective though.95Theses wrote:

Setting up funding and running a board is possible ....Look! we are only a year old, we were born from strife too .
What you need to do is Find yourselves a Pappa and then some Admin to stand beside him .
Funding ? ask for pledges and see how much you can potentially raise then you know the size of the thing you are creating .
Oh and you can't have our Pappa We are keeping him

Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins and Dr Karl Kruszelnick were the main influences on me when I decided to study Science at Uni 17yrs ago.
I've been a supporter / keen follower (like many, many, 100's of thousands of others) of RD's for the last 20yrs. I would never result to insulting a man who has earned my respect over the years, but a man who has proved with his actions this week, that ... he is only human like the rest of us.
As starr said, he still has my respect for his stella work.
However, I'm just a little disappointed whilst simultaneously laughing my head off at his post on the forum as it is pure comedy gold
Like I've said to many of my wonderful friends that I have made at RDF's (and here) its HIS website, he can do whatever HE wants ... we are however free to withdraw our support and respect (it's a two-way street) for HIS website and free to say whatever we want.
Its very Rich of Richard to happily take the fame and fortune that comes with his celebrity and then totally disrespect the people who have helped him to that position. Its even richer to dismiss people's attitude to an internet forum as 'trivial' yet simultaneously taking seriously what people say about HIM on another forum and get offended by it
I maybe a nobody who never was, just an average guy, in an average home with a nice tiled floor ... but even I know, you don't ...

Fletch: Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. Amen. What? Other sins? Uh, I parked in a handicap spot on my way up here. Actually, on a handicap person. I told him I'd be back in five minutes, so that's not such a big deal.
