Are slightly OT posts given a little more leeway or less leeway? Like say that you're discussing Nietzsche's philosophy, and something about his relationship with Wagner comes up, then that leads to a little discussion about Wagner's music. If it doesn't get too out of hand, are posts like that usually left alone?
We are generally more flexible in this regard. Just how much is ... flexible. ;)

Anything in "The Pub" is pretty much fair game, in the "serious stuff" we try to keep things on track.
The basic rule is "play nice" that is, if discussing something, attack the argument, not the person.
In the case you sited, we'd probably ask the person to keep it on track, or offer to split if its a serious derail. If it does start to get out of hand, then yes, we would split and PM the person to let them know where we put it.
But it's really up to the thread starter to start the thread in the right place to begin with. We can help and if anyone has any issues, then a report, PM or something to an admin or mod works.

Ummm.... here there is a talent for derailing in a post or two. Except for a few areas, one can expect any given thread to denigrate to silliness and absurdity. If your OP is about Wagner, within three posts you'll be talking about the Three Stooges.

It depends where the post is made.

In the "Fun stuff" section, derails are the norm. Often the first post is a derail!
In the serious discussion sections, we try to keep things tidier.

But we are not anal about anything here. If the derail is vaguely OT, it tends to stay, if not, it will get moved to its own thread.

We DO NOT delete anything except spam and accidental duplicate posts. We do not censor posts (except as a joke!) We move threads to more appropriate places if we think they need it.

We like people to behave civilly towards each other. We don't tolerate personal insults (unless they are in fun and both parties are happy with that.) We also don't like it when a member takes an aggressive or provocative attitude to others, even if they are careful to avoid directly attacking them.

We don't give a fuck if people swear. Again, unless it is part of a deliberate attack.

We only issue board warnings as a joke. We use public reminders about conduct in the thread where any incident takes place instead. We don't ban anyone except spammers but if someone is a complete dickhead, they will find themselves on repeated 6 month vacations!

Three?? We aren't doing our job properly if we ever get three sensible posts in a row.

Does that mean that we're now like the Anglicans being wooed over to the Catholic church with promises of bigotry?

More like wooed by the mormons with promises of bigamy :naughty:
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

So, the RDF's OT board used to be even more OT than it was?
I posted stupid shit like asking who's everyone's favorite current generation video game system.
What specifically wasn't allowed when I joined that was allowed before the schism?

Any other notable differences here?
