I'm still waiting on confirmation that RD knew of what was happening. Despite the fact that Josh asserted as much, a part of me feels that the statement regarding contacting richard, riling up the peons and going bananas verbally says that Josh hid it from RD and passed it along as a simple harmless change.

Further, if Richard did know the full implications of what was done and was content with the outcome, I would only lose a bit of personal respect for him; I still love his books, and I am cuddling with my copy of the Selfish Gene right now(my father thinks I love Richard more than him...)

I've always believed that the sort of person someone is and wether they are correct about stuff is entirely divorced. I happened to think that not only was RD correct he was also a really nice bloke.

If it turns out that he did order this trashing and burning wholesale of so many peoples work and commitment for years, then my respect for him as a person has gone down considerably, it doesn't mean I think he's all of a sudden wrong and I'm about to bow down to lord jeebus.

Missed our point, I think, as both Ameriboi and myself have indicated we deeply respect RD for the books and position on atheism, while being disappointed in his handling of forum affairs, which seems pretty well your position...

I was disagreeing with the 'only lose a bit of personal respect for him' part.

If he thinks this was the best thing to do, to cut all lines of communication between people who have built up relationships of years on that site by shutting down the forum overnight and turning off the PM's then I have lost pretty much all the personal respect I ever had for him, it currently looks like he might actually be the elitist jerk I spent so long defending him from being.

Damn, why didn't you post this last night? We wouldn't have needed the last 23/24 pages.

They were originally going to leave it open for 30 days but appear to have been rather unprepared for the reaction...so much for planning then. And consideration.

They were informed a while ago about possible and probable reactions from the membership if they just threw the forum away. They also experienced a bit of a rough ride from staff in the last few weeks so they knew that people would go bananas if they dumped the forum.

Bloody hell. As if they even needed telling in the first place. But they were told anyway, and still went ahead.

Not to mention that they deleted two accounts of two long standing members: CJ and Mazille. All their posts gone, all their contributions to the forum. This amounts to something like 13000 posts. This is outrageous.

They didn't just disable the accounts? They deleted the posts as well?

EDIT: Just checked, and indeed they did. I found a thread started by CJ - the one about lowering the number of posts in a page. The Tech. Support index says he started it, but his posts are missing from the thread. That's just vandalism.

I wanted to be able to archive all posts. There are so many good posts by Mazille and some of the other mods that have been "annihilated"
