This is what I sent to those who were playing a mafia game when the curtain fell. It includes a shout-out to Durro (creator o' the fun), but I can easily extend the same level of appreciation to every other staff member for helping to create a community:
This was a very heavy handed shut-down of the forum. Obviously, Richard and the Powers That Be have a different vision, which is their prerogative, but someone is deeply oblivious to the extraordinary community-building power of the existing forum. How many people have come out as atheists, or have been encouraged to let go of that last thread of doubt, simply because the forum offered numerous ways in which to do so. Checking in with "Old Farts" or playing wonderfully silly games (thank you SO MUCH, Durro!), are just as important as science and philosophy, IMHO. Someone wants this forum to be exclusively highbrow, it seems, but dammit, how boring is that!
I was beginning to feel like I was a part of something wonderful, and I feel like Josh (et. al) have done irreparable damage to that. Maybe things will be fine, but regardless, a message has been sent and received, and it leaves me quite cold. I'm just glad to have connected with like-minded people to the extent that I did, and I'm happy for those who have made friendships through RD.net. Life in the real world includes real people, which is why I'm saddened by Josh's tone and methods; it's as if he forgot who we are.
So, it's time to move on. I'm glad to have found a new home.
Always be yourself...unless you suck.
