I can't see us picking up anywhere near as many of those as RD.net did - they were attracted to Dawkins' name. A few might be fun for a while but I can't see us being beset with chew-toys.

Doesn't the RDF closure mean that it's simply going to open up again in a month or so? Apparently we're not going to "loose" our usernames & logins, but is it not still going to have a forum, or is that all in the past?
Confused.

As far as I can tell, it means they will have something like the front page, but with the facility for people to post their own articles if some supermod oks the post.
The logins are already linked, although it appears some (Mazille for one?) may have already been banned for being vociferous in their protests over what has taken place today.
Right now, it's hard for me to imagine posting on anything they put together.
Yep +1

I have been posting there again lately, mostly about this Teabagger business, but then this whole shutdown thing happened out of the blue.

^^^ That is a good majority of what we're about here. We're a community of friends who support each other and have fun together. We have our spats, too, but we're mainly like the pub you stop into to meet up with the auld gang and chat about everything and nothing.

You can just not argue with people if you don't want to

And will everyone who arrived here tonight stay and be regular posters .. probably not.
I can't see floods of people coming here to argue with us lot . RDF of some sort will be back up and running soon and the people looking for a fight will go there like they always have I presume .
Quite a few people have signed up tonight and are already getting the feel of the place

For those, like me, who are waking up to a brand new and exciting day...

...and can't be arsed to wade through zillions of posts, I have discovered (after wading through zillions of posts) that posting has been totally disabled at RD now. They were originally going to leave it open for 30 days but appear to have been rather unprepared for the reaction...so much for planning then. And consideration.

No, I completely understand. A lot of people just need a place to vent for now. And as far as I can tell the "New" and "Improved" RD.net won't really be a place people will feel they can participate in with any regularity. It's possible I am misinterpreting what Josh said in his announcement, but in sounds like they are going towards some kind of "fora" format where mods dictate just about everything that gets posted. While that format is fine for a new startup website (I've had a similar idea for a new website floating around in my head), it is a disaster for a website with such a huge and dedicated existing user base. Anyway, I am not telling anyone with a differing opinion to bugger off, I'm just saying the flavor of this forum is decidedly humanist in nature, leaning towards hedonism with a huge dash of chill pill.

This is not a place for
polemicists, regardless of their ideology.

They were informed a while ago about possible and probable reactions from the membership if they just threw the forum away. They also experienced a bit of a rough ride from staff in the last few weeks so they knew that people would go bananas if they dumped the forum.
