Apocalypse Now
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Raise the Red Lantern:

It's breathtaking - you could freeze frame anywhere and just look at the picture for an age. It's heart breaking, poetic, harsh, exquisite, the sound track is flat so you almost feel the snow in winter. I was enchanted many years ago and have never found a film to equal it. China tried to ban it so prior to DVDs it became very rare, my VT copy cost me £40 and took months to get - DVDs brought it to life again.

Watch it - it's still relatively expensive even on ebay but you'll know why when you see it and you'll always be able to get what you paid for it.

I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

I agree it's an absolutely fabulous film! I adore the director, Zhang Yimou and Gong Li the starring actress.

Shanghai Triad, another one of his works is also pretty amazing as a classic gangster film with a great love twist, starring the same actress, Gong Li.

I don't think you can go wrong watching any of his films.

I love this movie! I first saw it on TV and had to have a copy of it. After months of searching, I found a DVD copy on ebay. Seeing it again was worth the wait.
