When my old printer ran out of ink, it was cheaper to buy a new printer than to buy more ink (I kid you not, $80 for ink, and I could get a new printer for $70, with ink). We picked up an HP printer. I installed the software, then had to update the software and drivers. Spent more time than I care to think trying to get the thing to work, it never did. Took the back, got a Canon (for the same price), installed the software, and started printing in a few minutes. The Canon prints, scans, copies, and faxes and the HP was just a printer. No more HP printers for me.

I went to the HP facility in Indianapolis back in 1989. I spoke to a junior engineer, asking him for a keyboard that bent in the middle so my hands were in a more natural position. He pretty much blew me off. Two years later they're selling "ergonomic keyboards."
We dumped all our ergonomic keyboards. No one here liked them, so we stopped ordering them.
They take some getting used to. The one-handed keyboards are even more challenging. Next time I get one I'll set it for Dvorak from the start.

Oh and why do you have to install software to fucking print something. :lay:

We just install HP universal drivers on our servers. No SW to install on the workstations.

IF you didn't that would mean it was included in Windows, or your fav operating system. I wouldn't like that much invested in one company.

Canon printers always seem to work for me. And you can get dirt cheap generic ink cartridges for most Canons, which is a HUGE +1

I can get about 3 new ones for my printer for that price.

Here you're lucky if your cartridge costs less than $19.95.

I had a HP deskjet all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, after it's mysterious accident involving an open window I went out and bought a lexmark pc4000, again printer/scanner/copier, have it 2 years and haven't had any problems as yet.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

I have not, and never will own a printer. Home printers are notoriously expensive (cost per page, taking everything into account).
I cannot think of a situation where I need one.

I bought an HP Laserjet 1100 for myself in 1998, and it is still on its first toner cartridge. I print perhaps 100 pages a year or so. It installs itself automatically in Windows and Ubuntu/Mint Linux so no messing with driver downloads. I print out my Dutchrobotgames Tech check forms, registration information on events, venue information and stuff like that.
