Noted with a certain interest ... :levi:

Lady Lex. She and Saratoga were originally supposed to be battle cruisers but (surprise!) they got nobbled by the Washington Naval treaty:

Lexington was sunk at Coral Sea. Saratoga was damaged. She left Pearl after 48 hours repair time (repairs continued at sea). This was the plus for wooden decks, the minus being that the hole would have been smaller if she'd been armored like the RN covered wagons.

The Japanese carriers of the time also had wooden decks ... and went up in flames if you looked at them funny. :what:

Damage control on US ships was so much better all the way through the war. The Japanese just didn't take it seriously enough.

I missed this when it was originally posted. That's before she was modified by having the secondary armament of 5.5 inch guns removed. Even that and other modernisation didn't save her.

 Built them both, and Warspite and Scharnhorst as well. And I still have Nelson, Iron Duke, King George V and Repulse to build. But 1/600 is just a bit small for me nowadays. I prefer 1/400 and 1/350 if I have the time, space and money.

My favourite Airfix kit would require a discussion of thesis length to sort out. :what?:

That and the fact that the Japanese didn't really "get" personnel survivability. It was seemingly at odds with their warrior tradition. Armour and self-sealing fuel tanks on aircraft? No thanks, not if you're fighting for the Emperor. :eddy:

Well we do have the seminary for just that sort of thing. You owe it to posterity to share your obsession! I mean that in a nice way.

When your "personal armor" is lacquered leather, metal armor does seem excessive.

Something like that (and maybe more) has been on my "to do" list for some time :shifty:. Soon. There's some (nautical) mileage in this thread yet.

EDIT: Right on cue ...

I will, I will ... I'm actually trying to do some building at the moment. Trying being the operative word. :what?:

And removing the Emperor's portrait in a drawn-out ceremony was the most important thing when a ship was sinking.

The USS Hornet, where my father served in Vietnam on a special task force reporting directly to the fleet admiral that had something to do with navigation and plotting air strikes - wish he had talked about it more, but he didn't seem interested in sharing the details.
