Ok. Definitely going now.

None of them indicate anything that seperates the film from the others like it. Not one of them.
Indeed, nothing at all is valid as far as movies go. Which causes confusion when people get all ruffled over them. It's just a movie.
Well, I wouldn't say "nothing at all", I think there's a sort of Universal truth that Battlefield Earth is absolute trite shit.
It's just a movie.

It's a tautology but all box-office success indicates is that a film made a lot of money. It tells you nothing about the film's merit. ![/quote]

The box office success is something that is important to ME. i sign up to movie box offices sites and get emails from them every week..I have for years.

I have done repeatedly and I know the films flaws. I am disappointed that more of the elements of Project 880 were not included in Avatar to make it a better film. Despite its flaws though I enjoyed the film and 95% of people I know have enjoyed it.. it's there to entertain..and that is what it does..it's not A History of the English Speaking Peoples but it doesn't try to be...

Some people seem determined to discredit the film for reasons I cannot fathom.. Ok maybe awards, general popularity amoungst movie goers (which is what I thought movies was about) or people whose job it is to write about film.. don't matter what jot as to whether a film is .. is what?,, good? successful? worth seeing?

So then if you disregard all those criteria... what criteria are you going by?

So do you now feel PADS (Post-Avatar-Depression-Syndrome) that has you longing for life among the Na'vi?
No. I do want to see it again, but it is just a movie - one I enjoyed very much, but nothing to get depressed about.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm already hating it. Unobtainium? UNOBTAINIUM? BECAUSE IT'S UNOBTAINABLE? WHAT THE FUCK!
Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
Anyway, covering up bad plot with cool effects reminds me too much of Metallica's Load and Reload albums. Better production than before, but really mediocre music. Someone needs to kill Cameron and put Tarantino in his office. I want an aesthetization of violence that makes me feel like I'm in the swordfight.

Unobtainium is another way of saying "I wish we had THIS stuff." It's the default name for a room-temperature super-conduct we haven't found yet. The word was coined in the 1950s.

You know, I gotta say I liked Avatar but I saw it in IMAX 3-D. I mean, hey, I always enjoy the IMAX 3-D movies at Disneyworld and I can't even remember if they had a story at all. It's like going to the "Feelies" in the Brave New World. If I'd also had a pack of Soma , the wife and I could have topped off the evening with fun hallucinations and passionless sex too.

++++++++++ Spoiler Alert +++++++++++++++
OK, so the story was derivative and I could tell within the first 10 minutes the humans would succumb to the Aquaman defense/offense.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I did sort of feel I was flying a few times. And for the first time I could actually envision myself fucking another species. So the movie worked for me.

Engineers have long (since at least the 1950s[2]) used the term unobtainium when referring to unusual or costly materials, or when theoretically considering a material perfect for their needs in all respects save that it doesn't exist. By the 1990s the term was in wide use, even in formal engineering papers such as "Towards unobtainium [new composite materials for space applications]".[3] The word unobtainium may well have been coined within the aerospace industry to refer to materials capable of withstanding the extreme temperatures expected in reentry. Aerospace engineers are frequently tempted to design aircraft which require parts with strength or resilience beyond that of currently available materials.

Unobtainium is also used for materials that are practical and really exist, but are difficult to get

I think Cameron hadto play a lot of the movie relatively safe first time. So yes the story may have been simple but with the other aspects of the movie being so ground breaking if he had gone all out on creating an alien world it might have *ahem* alienated too many people. He also had to play it safe with how the Na'vi look etc.. if they were all tentacles and slime it would have been harder forthe audience to accept the romance. I personally find District 9 difficult to watch as the aliens in that remind me a bit too much of Jeff Goldblum al a Fly transformation.

Cameron has stated that the other movies will be set off Pandora and on Polythemus / the other moon.. so I guess we will have to wait and see but I suspect we will get to see far more of the varied landscape and life in the system. Although I cannot fathom how the story will pan out.

After reading the Project 880 article (which contains many spoilers for those who haven't seen Avatar..) I can't help but wish Cameron had kept most of those elements and made a longer and more throrough film.. but 160 is the Imax cut off point unfortunately and he had to make a rounded and complete storyline...and to allow him to show off the effects and his vision any complexities in the story were left out.

My problem was that it was a rather trite approach to the whole thing. The term is real, but the point is that they were referring to something which did exist all over the planet and they chose to nuke a tree to get it. It's not 'unobtanium', it's 'cannotbefuckedthinkingofarealreasontanium'.
The amount of money wasted on all those troops and missiles and the project of the Avatars itself, how this 'unobtanium' justified it was never explained. Not even the bad guy "It'll make more money than we've spent" speech.
