Get The Devils with Oliver Reed. Best film ever.

I'll look out for it, anything with Oliver Reed is worth a look. I only just got a DVD player though, so I only have 4 DVDs and all suggestions are welcome.

The Devils can be difficult to obtain. Especially an unedited version. It has quite a controversial history. Last year Film Four showed the unedited version and I've been praying for them to show it again so I can record it (and then slapped myself for thinking that my utterances to the sky could somehow affect the minds of the decision makers at Film Four).

The chances that any two people will have strongly overlapping taste in movies ... not that high :shifty:. Everyone likes Shawshank (and if they don't, they should :lay:), so you can't deduce much from the fact that we both like that. I don't have much DVD's anyway - I'm not a big-time movie watcher. I tend to go for quality over quantity.

My DVD collection does look distinctly laddish, although I don't go in for any superficial smash-bang stuff. No Die Hard, Lethal Weapon or any such crap. :|~

Ever watched The Man Who Would Be King? Highly recommended, and not just by me. I think there are at least two other people here who also really like this movie. Bella might be one, can't recall who else.

Now is a good time to buy DVDs on the cheap BTW, as Blu-Ray is slowly taking over.

Yeah, I get that its controversial from the wiki link you posted. Still, I have a local DVD/music shop who will try and obtain anything I ask them to order, so here's hoping they're a bit more efficient than the book shop who told me Demon Haunted World was out of print.

Yeah, I know but which movies do you like to re-watch every few years? I'm just fishing for suggestions, no illusions about sharing the same tastes on the grounds of The Shawshank Redemption.

Shawshank is exceptionally good for a cliché ridden film. It just goes to show that even if the story is nothing new the way its told can make a world of difference. Its also the only film I've seen which is exactly the same as the book (except in the book the character "Red" is a white Irish guy with red hair. I think Morgan Freeman was a better choice).

Never seen Shane, but The Royal Tennenbaums is another one I'd forgotten how good it was.

I've never watched The Green Mile because I still intended reading the book first some day (it was originally released in serialised form IIRC).

Another suggestion: Strangers On A Train - my favourite Hitchcock movie. I saw Rear Window for the first time over the holidays. It was good, but not in the same class as Strangers On A Train.

Shane is a classic western movie - 1953, shot in the old TV-screen format. Not widescreen in other words - that didn't take off until the late 1950s. Jack Palance is wonderful as the baddie. If you don't cry at the end, you're not human. :ddpan:

I saw Eraserhead recently and would recommend it. Only because I want someone else to have their head fucked with and not feel so alone and weird.

Ever seen Brazil by Terry Gilliam (of Monty Python fame)?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/

Possibly an acquired taste.

The Caine Mutiny - based on a novel written by Herman Wouk :|~, but don't let that put you off. Bogart's best ever performance IMHO. José Ferrer is also brilliant in this. Another movie also highly rated by denizens of rationalia.

Brazil is absolutely brilliant. Acquired taste me bollox. Just not for Philistines and those of a boorish inclination.

Just covering all the bases. I bought it on DVD, so my money is where my mouth is. One of the best "dystopian" movies ever made. Although I guess you'd have to count Bladerunner in that category also.
