Help me sort this, please.
I'm adding a few hundred (probably 1,000+ when I'm done) speeches to this page.
As I rehab the individual pages I want to put events in between to put the speeches into historical perspective. Does this make sense to you? And how could I do it better?

Right off the bat, I saw "Insturments" in the subtitle. Gimme a few minutes to ponder on your real question, tho.

The site is begging for pics. Any chance you could post relevant pics between the links? Country maps, battle scenes, flags, leaders, etc?

I mostly leave the pics to Patrick at Hyperwar. At one time I was hoping to keep the whole site to a size that could be d/l'd in a reasonable amount of time. If you go up one level you'll see the home page.notFBM wrote:You kneed a gnu smell chekder...Gawdzilla wrote:I used a smell checker!notFBM wrote:Right off the bat, I saw "Insturments" in the subtitle. Got it. But I still know dick-all about web design, so I don't think I can help much. I'd look for blood or naked women, but if you're staying away from pics...Gawdzilla wrote:I mostly leave the pics to Patrick at Hyperwar. I'm not looking for mechanics, I'm looking to make it a sort of hyper chronology, I guess. Still working on how to work on it.notFBM wrote:Got it. If you're talking about the "year" pages, you might want to look at arranging things in a table, with the date down the left, the speech title on the right, and then for the reference events again have a date, but the event on the right in a different colour, or smaller font.
Something like this:

That's a possibility. I could put a thumbnail column in for pictures of the person giving the speech.Thinking Aloud wrote:If you're talking about the "year" pages, you might want to look at arranging things in a table, with the date down the left, the speech title on the right, and then for the reference events again have a date, but the event on the right in a different colour, or smaller font.

Having a table also opens up the possibility of colour coding rows or columns, as well as adding other stuff later (e.g. links to say, video files of speeches or events, depending on how far the site goes in the long term).Gawdzilla wrote:That's a possibility. Re: Help me sort this, please.
I at October, 1940, right now, with speeches relating to WWII. Extrapolating that, I figure there will be around 200 speeches per page. I want to keep each year on one page so that you can search for a person or event through the whole year. Searching is another reason for adding events as I don't want to pre-load a speech with "keywords" that affect the readers expectations. I want them to get their own impression from the speech. So, ideally, they'll know that, say, France just fell, and FDR is making a speech the day after, along with a Senator or two.Thinking Aloud wrote:Having a table also opens up the possibility of colour coding rows or columns, as well as adding other stuff later (e.g. links to say, video files of speeches or events, depending on how far the site goes in the long term).Gawdzilla wrote:That's a possibility. Re: Help me sort this, please.
I'm thinking of using the entries from here to give context to the speeches. The page would not be primarily a chronology, but a link to the "events" page for that year would start off each page. Problem is it stops at 1943.

Re: Help me sort this, please.
I know you're not really after mechanics, but if the opportunity presents itself, consider putting all of this kind of stuff into a database, and having your webpages read the data from there. If there are going to be many hundreds of entries it might be worth looking into. It'll give you the ability to sort, search and group in different ways. For instance, someone just interested in Churchill's speeches could get a page of results suited to them, rather than have to search through a complete chronological list.Gawdzilla wrote:I'm thinking of using the entries from here to give context to the speeches.
