Damned well said.
Although judging by your avatar you seem to be into fantasy art of which Avatar is an example of come to life.
I still love good fantasy, but fantasy generally doesn't do much better in the movies than science fiction does. I think people who make those movies don't expect us to get it, so they dumb it down for us. And the dumb-bunnies pony up, too. But I'm not a dumb-bunny.

When I was in high school, I used to read science fiction by the ton, and I've noticed that it never works in movies or on TV. Mainly because the people who make movies and TV shows don't know anything about science fiction. TV & movies are always 40 to 60 years behind where science fiction is. Just as one example, consider "Back to the Future." The idea of going back in time and meeting your father before you were born was popular in science fiction in the 1950s. They wore it out then, and haven't messed with it since. The idea of whipping up a time machine--or anything else--in a home shop and going adventuring is much older than that.

When whatsisname made Stars Wars, he went even farther back. He went as far back as he could go: a thousand years or more. And then he made an empty-headed piece of shit out of it.

So, yeah, if Avatar is "this" generation's Star Wars, I expect I would hate it.
Yeah. You will. To be honest I barely liked it either. I'd give it a 6 or 7 but only because of its WOW factor.
Good. It's good to see one of the more intelligent members of this forum confirms my suspicions.

I was afraid that was going to offend, but I wasn't sure. I apologize. I don't think you're hicks.

Most of the people here are pretty smart, the rest are from Wales.

:what: I wouldn't go that far. I just have a higher standard of criticism for a film than most. A lot of people seem to think this film is beyond the normal criticism we would give to any other film or say that this should not be judged by its story but by the effects (?) and I seriously disagree with them. When they see it on small screen it will lose its magic and my 6 or 7 will become a 4 or 5.

I don't understand though why they have to be mutually exclusive.

My favourite movies are such a wide-ranging bunch

Having read the original script for the movie it's a shame time constraints prevented JC from including a lot of those elements and characters because it would have been a much deeper story and you completely understand why Jake does what he does (he has never seen a forest before for example) but it would have had to be two movies.

Personally I didn't despise the story - it was what it was. It could have been better but there weren't any glaring oddities with it or anything. It's just a story as old as time told in a different setting.

Yeah I was reading that too. Sounded like a way better film.

Incidentally up to end of 29th December it had made $730 million worldwide - at this rate it will pass $1billion this weekend!. I know the imax showings in Manchester were completely sold out today and yesterday as I wanted to go and "Avatar sold out" was trending on twitter earlier.

Cameron has got a beast on his hands - this is insane!

Mine aren't. As a writer myself, I'm a great big prick about the writing.

Yep, that's my point. A little bit of research can save an embarrassing review.
