I learned a long time ago to not get too riled up over a movie. I go for the entertainment, and leave my "missions" at the door. I won't agree with some of the things in the movie, even a comedy like "No Country for Old Men".

Cameron is an atheist isn't he? I don't think he has the intention of what you stated Andrew at all.. I saw an interview with him where I am sure he said he wanted it to make people think about environmental issues.. maybe I am mistaken

And the point here was that the planet had a neural net, not a god. It's not impossible for such a thing to happen, and I thought it was treated sanely as possible given the fact that it was SWAG to the tenth.

Trigger Warning!!!1! :
Obviously any conjecture as to the vision of the director is just that. I guess it just kind of irks me in the same way that religion irks me when it claims to be the foundation of morality. I want to scream, "No! You've piggybacked on morality and perverted it and now you're claiming credit!" Here, it seems like the latest technology is being used to create a movie that is fairly luddite in its views, promising neural network uplinks and data storage immortality for the 'green' cause. These things are clearly the domain of the technocrats. It would be akin to using cheap Mexican labor to build a wall between Mexico and the U.S. The very nature of the act itself shows why it's flawed.
EDIT - Spoilered my post. Is there a place to talk about this that doesn't require all the spoilers?

I agree.

I must say I've been a bit confused by some atheists who have told me they didn't like the deity stuff. Umm... did they even watch the film? :ask:
Trigger Warning!!!1! :
They presented a completely biological entity. A biological computer. Sure, the super organism crap about Earth is a load of nonsense. But it's also nonsense that there would be horse-like aliens, dog-like aliens and humanoid aliens that fill the niches filled on Earth by horses, dogs and humanoids, respectively. It's unrealistic, but it's not supernatural. I'm still hearing from people criticising Avatar for the supernatural elements. I'm doing the opposite. I'm praising it for avoiding the supernatural. And above all that, it was fucking cool and fucking fun. That's what matters.

On the foreign front, Avatar rocketed to an estimated $159.18 million in five days from 106 territories (which excluded the key markets of Japan, China and Italy). Of its 14,461 total screens, 3,671 or 25 percent were 3D, and they accounted for 56 percent of the gross. Add in the $73 million domestic haul, and Avatar's worldwide opening was $232.2 million, the ninth highest-grossing of all time and the biggest for a non-sequel.

I'm going to see this today.
Libertarianism: The belief that out of all the terrible things governments can do, helping people is the absolute worst.

Of course 3-D. Don't se the point in watching it in 2-D. That's like watching Jurassic Park in flip book.
