R. Lee Ermey was never a Gunnery Sergeant. He had to get special dispensation from the Commandant to be addressed as "Gunny".
Wiki says he was the first retired Marine to receive a promotion. Just for acting like a badass in a movie. But the movie kicked ass, so... 8-)

He didn't get the official nod until he started doing his TV show. He was embarrassed at being called "gunny" by active duty Marines and the show producers campaigned for him. He was a recruiting icon by then so the Corps decided it would be good PR.

Why is it a promotion to go from Drill Sergeant to Gunnery Sergeant, anyway? A sergeant is a sergeant, right? Both E7?

Edit: Wikied it. It's from E-6 to E-7.

But, still, why is a Gunny a step up from a Drill Sergeant?

E-7 through E-9 are considered "senior enlisted". In the navy they go from dungarees to khakis at E-7, Chief Petty Officer.

You notice how they sacrificed "Pvt. Pyle" for the edification of the other recruits? That used to be established policy in all the branches, IIRC. Pour les encourager autres.

Yeah. When I was a counselor at a mimimum security facility back in TN, they made us stop doing that. :nono: It's so effective! Y'know, discounting the suicides.

I found it to be so. Instructive back in '69, watching them dismantle a human being.

Best quotes from that movie:

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human, fucking beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit. Because I am hard you will not like me. But the more you hate me the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: How tall are you, private?
Private Cowboy: Sir, five-foot-nine, sir.
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: Five-foot-nine, I didn't know they stacked shit that high.

Oh my gawd... FUWF, be more like him!!! ;)

The love scene in Franco Zefferelli's "Romeo and Juliet". It was the first time I saw anything remotely sexual, including a naked breast.

The final scene in "Carrie". I just about hit the ceiling.

And finally, "Excalibur". I was high on acid when I saw it and it tripped me out for days.

"Romeo and Juliet" was a major make-out film when I was younger. :naughty:

"Carrie" was cool. I had a thing for kinky haired brunettes for a while there.

Love the Arthurian stuff. Ever seen "Hearts and Armor"?
