Why does atheism so often include skepticism ...
Re: Why does atheism so often include skepticism ...
IMO a religious upbringing creates skepticism. Parent are able to coax you out of your belief in fairies, the monster in the wardrobe, santa, etc, but god remains 'fact'. When we discover that it is, in fact, fantasy, we go "Hang on... what else is bollocks? There must be loads of it! I'll be on the look out from now on".

I'm sure that in some cases this might be true. I was however not brought up religious and I'd like to think of myself as skeptic though. And I have seen many of examples of religious people getting conned in droves when someone presents him/herself as of the same faith.MCJ wrote:IMO a religious upbringing creates skepticism. Same here. Many people never become sceptical about the religion that was put on them. I was brought up without any kind of religion or woo, so I was sort of naturally sceptical of anything like that. I never believed in Father Christmas or the Tooth Fairy or God, not even as a very young child.leo-rcc wrote:I'm sure that in some cases this might be true.
