Just put them with the tips pointing up. Sorted. No pocket protector needed.
The tips dry out when you do that.

Pressurized chamber behind the ink means it writes first time, every time, any orientation (even during the 5 minutes of weightless). Plus the ink is indelible/permanent.
I bought one when they first came out. They don't stand up to explosions very well. Over-pressures cause ruptures.
I've been using them continuously for years (over a decade?) for official records. Only had one that leaked around the roller ball a little bit. I have not, however, ever subjected one to explosions. I don't suppose i would survive that very well, either.

I nearly didn't. Flail chest as one result. My pen was bent at a 45 degree angle. Other than that one incident, however, I never had any trouble with them. (Somebody stole the pen out of my nightstand while I was in the hospital.)

I'm surprised the surgeon didn't have to pull it out of you. Oh, and I'm glad you survived.

Too bad about the pen, though.

It probably broke one of my ribs. They pulled a few items out of me that I didn't care to have identified.
