Shackleton was a fucking cat-murdering cunt! Curse his memory! :pissed: :lay:
The cat would have died anyway ...he killed it to save it the drawn out death.. not nice I know but the best thing to do in the circumstances... although not something I could do :(
Although a couple of dogs did once survive in Antarctica despite being abandoned for nearly a year:

Not to mention its successor being named after his first ship, the Nimrod.

BTW, although he rescued all the men on his side of Antarctica, three men were lost on the "other" side of the continent. He did help rescue the survivors there as well though. Read The Lost Men by Kelly Tyler-Lewis.

Why? Cat's don't need that much food compared to humans or big dogs. McNish could have fed him out of his own rations.

Not read that one but have got Shackleton's Forgotten Men by Lennard Bickel. The hardship those guys endured to lay Shackleton's supply depots beggars belief.

The Lost Men is only a couple of years old, and is readily available at a book store near you. :whisper:

One book that is unfortunately out of print is This Accursed Land, also by Bickel, about the Mawson expedition. It was the featured book in The Reader's Digest many years ago. :read:

Will keep an eye out for it. Have got Douglas Mawson's Home of the Blizzard. Epic stuff.

Your ear gets very sensitive to changes in the sound of an engine when you're a few hundred miles from land. Navy pilots HATE walking home from work.

Pets are a luxury.. carrying a cat means perhaps not carrying a lifesaving piece of equipment...

It's easy to make judgements and think something is wrong we're you're tucked up at home safely but if you're in danger of dying in Antarctica there is no time for senitmentality or the luxury of a pet.. Don't get me wrong there is no greater animal lover than me.. I give money to 2 animal charities on a monthly basis and my heart breaks over some of the awful and cruel things that go on in this world and I would love to stop it if I had 3 magic wishes.. but I think if it was kill or be killed or starve or kill I could just about do anything. We don't experience the raw will to survive in our luxurious state of living these days so we can't judge what we would or wouldn't do if it came down to the wire..

Bah, pathetic felines never even made it to the South Pole without our help. Lazy buggers.
