He's dead, Jim

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Joy Division, all quite good, but I bet you still haven't gotten around to the Stone Roses yet! Get off your arse son.
Consider that 6 months of your life wasted not appreciating them (well 6 monthsish, I can't quite remember when you posted that music request thread)

Re: Joy Division
Joy Division are one of my all time favourite bands. They were responsible for taking music in an entirely new direction. They sounded like no-one before or since. Ian Curtis's lyrics and voice were utterly original. The techniques used to achieve the unique drum sounds on their records (recording each separate item of drum kit individually in realtime) have never been repeated (mainly because they were so labour intensive compared to today's sampling and sequencing.)owtth wrote:Joy Division, all quite good, but I bet you still haven't gotten around to the Stone Roses yet! Ian Curtis's tortured life (brilliantly depicted in the film Control) which led to his untimely and unforeseen death (unforeseen despite the dire warnings of his lyrics) were intricately woven into everything they created.
In contrast, The Stone Roses were just another pop band with a fairly new sound. They were good but not to be compared to the once-in-a-lifetime genius that was JD.

Re: Joy Division
I have listened to the Stone Roses. Excellent. But fucking hell, Joy Division... I am now proceeding to acquire as much post-punk as I can. New Order, Bauhaus, The Smiths, Buzzcocks, Happy Mondays...owtth wrote:Joy Division, all quite good, but I bet you still haven't gotten around to the Stone Roses yet! Get off your arse son.

I watched Control last night. Fucking great movie. Little perplexed at the Killers' cover of Shadowplay though

Re: Joy Division
For my money I wouldn't bother with Bauhaus, but that first New Order album is fucking astonishing - best album Joy Division never made. Think I actually prefer it to Unknown Pleasures. Check out their Warsaw tracks (pre-Joy Division) too if you get the chance.

Re: Joy Division
I bought a Joy Division album many years ago. It sounded exactly the sort of thing I'd like. Only I didn't
I thought it was bloody awful
Perhaps I should give them another chance
If you're interested in Bauhaus, you might check out Peter Murphy solo. I have Cascade and Deep, and I think they're both astonishingly good.

Re: Joy Division
I've got a collection of singles, including stuff from the Warsaw days. The first New Order is the one that was supposed to have Blue Monday on it, right?War Arrow wrote:For my money I wouldn't bother with Bauhaus, but that first New Order album is fucking astonishing - best album Joy Division never made. I'm starting off with the best of (for an overview) and the debut of Bauhaus, see if I like 'em. Although it'll probably have to wait, I just discovered the Libertines and what to understand them first.

Re: Joy Division
Blue Monday was a little later. Movement (first NO album) was (unless I'm totally off the mark here) songs that would have been the third JD album, though were barely more than sketches when Ian Curtis died (though Ceremony and In A Lonely Place (first NO single) were songs performed at last JD gigs)... so it sounds JDesque in many ways, though with a little more synth. The Him and Dreams Never End both still send shivers up my spine... ooo ooo also check out Everything's Gone Green (2nd NO single - will be on some comp somewhere)...FrigidSymphony wrote:I've got a collection of singles, including stuff from the Warsaw days. Re: Joy Division
Ok, the Libertines are... filthy. Very, very, filthy. The music reeks of sex, and not the slowly climaxing through kisses and caresses kind. It's the dirty, bare mattress in the middle of a decrepit flat somewhere in Queens beneath a single harsh lightbulb kind. And they wouldn't want it any other way. Then you hear the almost Beatle-like choruses and you're reminded that there's nothing wrong with filth or base instincts. It's something pure, something wonderful, if you can only open up to it. I think this stuff is brilliant. Give them another go.
