That's so true - we invest it with meaning, it's not inherent. And we also make things meaningless if we choose. We also know there's no afterlife so perhaps are more likely to savour what we have and imbue it with the importance it deserves as our one and only shot at making a happy/purposeful existence while we're here.Feck wrote:A life with an end only seems pointless IF you think it needs a point .....We can see pictures in the ink blots but they are not there ,just ink blots no pics no meaning .The fun does not become less fun because it will end leaving nothing behind But because it will end.

You know, people talk about atheists leading "pointless" lives. But Calvinist, IIRC, believe that your fate is set at birth and nothing can change it. So "why should they be good"?

This thread is not about delusions, but about our real life memories being deleted. Gone forever. No pictures on the internet. No photo's on the wall.Gawdzilla wrote:The illusion of survival is all they have, and they have all the baggage that goes with that delusion. You can tell me about one of your memories, but I'm not you. It's your memory. It dies when you die. No one will ever know of that memory.
The more I think of tis, the more it scares me. I have some very happy memories, but when I die, those memories will be no more.
My memories. No one will know them.

It's okay to be scared, I've been so scared I shit myself before. But being scared isn't going to change anything. So you have the choice to be rigid in fear of an event you can't affect at all, or take advantage of what you've got to have a day in the sun.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:This thread is not about delusions, but about our real life memories being deleted. Re: Memories. Gone forever.
As it is, you lose memories during your lifetime. There were things I know I could remember years ago that I can't remember anymore. And there must be many more things I don't even remember forgetting about. They're gone, never to return.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:This thread is not about delusions, but about our real life memories being deleted. Gone forever. No pictures on the internet. No I got lost at "This thread is not about delusions, but about our real life memories being deleted." I think we make it all up anyway.

No, it's not about being scared, it's about the memories.
A photo can show how happy you are whilst hurtling down a log flume at the theme park, but it wll never show the excitement while waiting in the queue.
It's the photo that your eyes took, whilst in that queue. That will be gone forever.

Okay, it will be gone. Is there anything anybody can do to avoid that?Deep Sea Isopod wrote:No, it's not about being scared, it's about the memories.

Re: Memories. Gone forever.
I think about it once in a while. We're only human, we have fears, concerns and doubts. But there's nothing I can do about the past or the future, so I deal with the here and now and get on with it.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Well, no. Re: Memories. Gone forever.
The regret at the deletion of memories stems from thought habits that are based on (at least) two misperceptions. One is that there is a thinker behind the thoughts, a doer behind the deeds, IOW, a self, a homunculus, a singular entity that abides is this body throughout a lifetime that somehow possesses characteristics, identity and memory. The other is that we carry the same memories over time. Each time you remember something, it's a new memory, a new cascade of biochemical activity, not an old one that's being put back into the projector.

What's so special about our memories anyway? I try very hard to forget most of them (unsuccessfully) and the fact that they will be erased eventually is one of the things that keeps me going.
