That absolutely and utterly isn't the point.Chauncey Gardner wrote:Wasn't michael owen available on a free transfer from newscastle and liverpool (specifically benitez) turned him down?
Benitez let Owen go in 2004 for two major reasons. Firstly, he didn't fit with the style of play and formation Benitez likes to use (Owen is a lethal scorer but his all round play is lacking) and secondly Benitez quickly understood that Owen had been fucking the club about for a number of years in order to wring out a giant contract - he saw through the bastard within weeks of taking over from Houllier (who treated Owen with kid gloves) and called his bluff.
Benitez then progressed with Liverpool and had two so called chances to resign Owen - the first was after Real dumped him but they were looking stupid money and Owen's contract demands were again too high, and then this summer after Liverpool had their best league season in almost 20 years and Owen was five years older than when Benitez got rid of him.
Also, Benitez absolutely had the measure of the man - for all Rafa's faults (fucking Lucas for one) he knows about the heart and soul of Liverpool, just as Bobby Charlton knows about the heart and soul of Man Utd.
Benitez brought back Fowler who was waaaaaaaaaaaaay past his best but his decision was a nod to the history of the club, a favour to Carragher and Gerard and a reminder to all the new players he had brought in at the time about what a true Liverpool legend was - Benitez saw that Fowler's presence alone would boost the squad, if not his on-field contribution.
