Benitez brought back Fowler who was waaaaaaaaaaaaay past his best but his decision was a nod to the history of the club, a favour to Carragher and Gerard and a reminder to all the new players he had brought in at the time about what a true Liverpool legend was - Benitez saw that Fowler's presence alone would boost the squad, if not his on-field contribution.

I dunno, I think the vast majority of EPL players are mercenary cunts. The only "move" based on advice from agents, now-a-days, rather than a love for a club.
Not all, there are exceptions, but still..... cunts.*

Amongst the very talented, yeah there are a lot of mercenary players, (personally I think most blame lies with agents)but many footballers on many teams are not mercenary, I could trot out Liverpool players that are loyal but to prove a point I'll mention Utd players, Giggs for one, and that wanker Scholes (sorry, can't resist), there are many players who would be held in much higher regard internationally if they had taken the money and made a big money move, Carlos Puyol for Barcelona, even though he is now probably on the decline,at his peak was one of the best defenders I've ever seen but he'll never be ranked amongst the best cause there was a never a chance of him going to another team. On the other hand the player who has generated the most in transfer fees (although with the summer's splurging this may be out of date) is Nicholas Anelka, Nicholas FUCKING Anelka!! He's had an average of £16m to spend per year since he arrived to overhaul the entire squad. Torres, Monstermasch, Aquilani and Johnson all cost more than that. Add Gerrard and Carragher, and that still leaves 18 european squad places to be filled on at most £16m total. It's hardly surprising there's some crap in there is it?

In five years he has signed 76 players for £229 million. The difference between Ferguson and Benitez's spending is £30 million, or one Berbatov - yet United's squad is miles deeper and more competent than Benitez's. And if Wenger is brought in to the equation it's much worse.

Look at the shit in Liverpool's first team squad - the witless Lucas, the headless fucking chicken that is Kuyt (cost £2 million less than Ronaldo!), the useless Voronin and N'gog, the underperforming Babel (do you think Ferguson would spend £10 million on a player and let him arse about like he has) and on and on and on...

Carragher and Gerard have now moved to beyond their prime, there is no one coming through - by this stage of Ferguson's reign in 1992 he was seriously challenging for the league. Liverpool are going nowhere.
