Art House Movies.

Post by Animavore » Sat Oct 24, 2009 2:27 pm

Does anyone else like art house movies?
These are just films I've gotten into recently after seeing The Holy Mountain and Antichrist.
I love the way these films create disturbance and divide audiences.
On my list of art house films to see I have

Dogville
À l'intérieur
Salò

Anyone else know of any tasty movies I would not have otherwise heard of in the mainstream media?

The City of Lost Children (same director as Delicatessen)

Um.... I used to watch loads in the Tyneside cinema in Newcastle, but that was a long time ago.

Hmm, well I like stuff that's outside the mainstream, but "art house" stuff can easily cross the line into pretentious and intolerable twaddle. So it's often hit or miss with this sort of thing. But a couple films I'd just been thinking of coincidentally are Faust and Alice by Jan Švankmajer. In fact I just ordered his Little Otik.

Is that the one with the cross-dressing boy? I just watched CJ7, a kid's movie by the guy who made the hilarious and wildly entertaining Kung Fu Hustle. The main character is a boy, but is played by a girl. She was the best actor they could find for the role, so they just cut her hair short and dressed her in boy's clothes :hehe: The thing is, if you didn't know she was a girl, you'd never guess

I generally prefer my movies to include car chases and explosions, but Koyaanisqatsi is an art house classic I can watch over and over.

'City of God' (Cidade de Deus) is a great movie. I liked it so much I went looking for it on DVD. It took me a while but now that it has won awards you can find it on any street corner.

Also, La Haine.

I really liked Umberto D. and The bicycle thief by Ettore Scola, Una Giornata Particolare is one of my all time favourite films, and Der Baader-Meinhoff Complex was pretty awesome. I didn't like Salo.

Another cool one is Six String Samurai.

Anyone else like Almodovars work? (Volver, Todo sobre mi madre, La mala educacion, Habe con ella etc.)

I thought "Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex" was an okay film, but not a film I would watch again if given a choice.

I don't know any of the other films you mentioned.

Although, don't waste your money on the City of Men dvd. It's pretty rubbish.
