And as a side question. I tend to lean to the right, and so Palin is something of an embarrassment for me. Is Oprah held in the same regard by the left-leaners here?

Yes, Oprah is one of those people I'd rather not have on my side in pretty much any argument that can't be settled with enough money.

Edit: I would say if there's any political force Oprah represents it's middle-aged houseswives.

I've never seen Oprah's show but my understanding is that she's fairly intelligent, reasonably well-spoken, and generally well-regarded, while Palin is none of those things.

I'm generally apolitical and although I think both left and right have a few asshats I generally think the right has some of the worst mofo's out there.
I mean I don't know of any lefty who compares to the likes of Bill O'Reilly, Glen Beck or GWB for total arse fuckery. As for Palin, she's out there on her own little spaceship. Even though I generally don't mind John McCain I really have to wonder what was going through his mind when he picked her.
