Have you been vaccinated?
I was pretty surprised to find quite a few atheists who are anti-vaccers on another forum I participate in. It has precipitated a lot of discussion, and I am wondering what people on this forum think about the regular flu vaccine, and the H1N1 vaccine.
Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

Re: Have you been vaccinated?
I am pretty sure the flu I had last week was N1H1, though I could be wrong. I would not normally bother with a flu vaccination in any case, but I have a (probably groundless) sense that this vaccine has been rushed onto the market and it makes me a little nervous. Not sure what I would do if I was told it was important to get it though!

I've had flu vaccines, but don't waste my time with them anymore - not out of any woo reason, just 'cos I would always get sick after getting them!

I also think I've had it already, but I wouldn't bother getting the vaccine because I think the risk is massively overblown. It is only flu.

Re: Have you been vaccinated?
I get the flu vaccine some years when I think of it, don't know why as the only illness that gets through my defences is tonsillitis, got the meningitis jab a few years back, and all the usual kids vaccines, never bothered with the MMR as I had already had measles and mumps as a kid.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Re: Have you been vaccinated?
May I ask those folks who have children or teens, are you getting them vaccinated?
Most of the responses show concern for whether you will get infected and survive, so I'm guessing you are pretty certain you won't have contact with the public, therefore you won't be infecting others, particularly children and teens?
When it comes to parents making a conscious decision not to vaccinate their child. I see no difference between not giving a child the vaccine, to say not giving them blood transfusions when needed or medicine to treat diabetes. (citing those cases where parents withheld medical treatment in favor of prayer)
What makes it so easy for people to question and/or refuse to take the vaccine is that there is no smoking gun that will point to them when, because they chose not to take the vaccine, they infected someone who ends up dying from it. In this case, I feel my concerns over the long term safety of taking this vaccine to my own health is trumped by concern for the lives of others.

If I didn't have a sinus infection, I would be getting both flu vaccines. As the front desk clerk at a hotel, I get exposed to all sorts of illnesses.
