The wording suggests that this still happens, so I presume we're not talking about some mooning mullarkey that used to happen in medieval battles?
I've seen it happen, but I have a document that directs that such happen, so it's not new. I think it happened for a long time, but has simply not be documented very well.
And people have yet to make a dent in my question ... :levi:
Truth. I'm stumped.

Hmmm .... early 20th century. Holding four large puppies, which would grow into very big working dogs.

Clue: He is featured in a Guinness TV ad. Now it's Google friendly ... :leave:

Is it to have the soldiers urinate to collect the ammonia?

Um, no. That would be handled more effectively in cattle barns.

They seldom made gunpowder at the front, so collection would be a routine. "History's Dirtiest Jobs" did a segment on urine collectors. :|~

We're going to have to kill off either or both of these questions as an act of mercy. :lay:

If I told you that the man in my photo served with distinction under two very famous 20th century explorers (and we've already established that it was early in the century).

A judiciously devised two-word google image search will find this on the first page ... what's he holding is the key to locating the image quickly.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Easy-peasy for us Paddies, although as recently as 10 years ago not many Irish people knew of him.

Early 20th century exploration ... large dogs -> polar exploration. Famous names? Try googling 'Scott' and 'Shackleton'. Along with 'puppies' ...

Now, as for 'Zillas question. :lay:

The soldiers would be standing, with their pants around their ankles. Consider how that would be useful.

Apart from urinating and receiving blowjobs, I can't think of anything :dono:
