Israel did commit serious war crimes says UN

Well...this is getting interesting...the UN has endorsed the Golstone report, which means the UN has officially declared that Israel and Hamas did commit serious war crimes in the recent massacre in gaza.

of course, mostly everyone already had an inkling that was the case, but, now that it's official...I wonder how barack Obama will react.

Can the USA be seen to be supporting war criminals in the form of Israel?

Are the Oslo committee sh!tting themselves that they might have to ask for the peace prize back?

Good question. However, the same question could be asked about the UN Human Rights Council...which has adopted the Goldstone report. As I understand it, there was a landslide vote in support of adopting the report.

It maybe possible for the USA to veto it at the security council level...but...somehow I think they couldn't possibly do that....not at this stage and with such overwhelming support for the report.

There's also the constitutional implications for the USA...i.e. the US Constitution absolutely forbids the spending of any public money on the establishment of any religion. Part of the Goldstone report deals with the Rise of Israeli Military Rabbi's who are becoming more powerful within the army and are actively training combat units into believing Israel's wars are "God's wars". Some even make parallels between the palastinians and the Amalakytes who were exterminated because of scripture. New army regulations mean the IDF rabbi's are now part of a military elite in Israel.

Hamas are also implicated in the report, but, I think most of the focus will be on how israeli lobby groups handle this and more importantly how the Obama administration deals with it.

That's a given, but, it would be disingenuous in the extreme to suggest that they are on a level pegging. For example, Hamas doesn't receive billions of dollars in support and arms from the USA.

What interests me is (a) the unprecedented and overwhelming support for the Goldstone report within the UN. I expected it to be brushed aside and forgotten (b) the reaction from the Obama administration.

Normally criticism against Israel invokes charges of anti-semitism but considering Goldstones background (he is Jewish) and the "not in our name" style statements from pro-Jewish lobby groups...particularly prominent american and canadian jews, following the massacre in Gaza last winter...it appears Israel has isolated itself from the international support it usually relied on to side-step any allegations of wrongdoing.

Whether that will mean anything when it gets to the security council level is yet to be seen, but, to be honest, I didn't expect the report to even get this far and the overwhelming, landslide vote within the UNHRC to endorse the report suggests that the same-old rules don't apply this time around.

There has never been a war without criminals on both sides. And in any close war, it is usually the biggest crooks that win. (Of course, they get to write their version of events afterwards, so we don't often get to hear about their crimes.)
