New anti-minaret poster

Post by Chinaski » Wed Oct 07, 2009 10:55 am

The Swiss right wing party SVP (Schweizer Volks-Partei) has begun a campaign to outlaw the building of minarets in Switzerland. While I would not like to see an increase of Muslim presence here either, I can't help but feel that the motives underlying the right wing here are not so much out of respect for human rights rather than populistic xenophobia. Anyway, here's the poster:

That hangs his heid and a' that
The coward slave, we pass him by
We dare be puir for a' that.

I agree with you. It's only a tower. It does seem xenophobic to me.

Fight their insane beliefs if they encroach on your reality, not their preferred architecture.

Um, that is where the bird-brained ones hang out, so I guess it would qualify.

Oooooh... it's a bit black and red, isn't it? Never positive colours for a political message.

It proably is right wing xenophobia, and a touch racist as well, but I would object to the visual pollution it represents anyway. And dont they call out loudly from it at various times of the day?

They are trying to mark their new territory. Fuck 'em all...

They'd be muted minarets, and only be attached to the mosques, like church spires to a church. Is it just to allow Christians their spires but not let Muslims have their minarets?

I'd rather have neither, but dammit.

It's a very ironic imposition of one group's ideology: the oppression of the ideology and practices of another group.

I would not, however, seek to oppress the first groups right to express their view about the second group's ideology and practices.

Group A: Let's build a useless fucking tower
Group B: We don't want a useless fucking tower, let's make a whole bunch of useless fucking posters and put them everywhere to show why we don't like useless fucking things!

I'm torn. I'm all for a little xenophobia, but I also like minarets...
Nobody expects me...
