They know a lot about their subjects. The important thing to remember is that you almost certainly know more than they do about a few things already and that that is bound to improve in your favour as you learn more.

Having provable, in-depth knowledge in one area does not qualify you for any superiority in any other area. Nobody knows everything. You can know a lot about one subject, or a little about many subjects. Just make sure you don't take the majority route and end up knowing dangerously little about fuck-all!

Sounds like the two of them are parrots. Anti-science parrots in this case. I love buzz-word thinking. It's quick, clean, and devoid of effort. And worth what you put into it, i.e., nothing.

Perhaps I'll be able to get them to expand on what they said sometime? I've already got into debates with college staff before, its fun!

Take it from a Philosophy major: postmodernism/postmodern deconstructionism = :airwank:
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."

It's a way of talking bollocks, whilst pretending to be all deep and meaningful. It was invented by the French, and popular among people who study the humanities - 'nuff said. The basic tenant of postmodernism is that you can never know anything (except when they arbitrarily decide to know something to fit what they're saying - then apparently you can).

That would be supremely appropriate - and ironic. :levi:
Tutors are rather informal anyway. Can be quite a laugh sometimes too.

I don't understand the irony because I don't know what post-modernism is :banghead:
Postmodernists never explain anything - that's the irony.

Thanks, that's what I wanted :D

Oh and by the way, can anyone give me a clear definition of solipsism?

Only you can do that, because only you exist. All of the rest of us are mere figments of your imagination. You are the only 'real' being, the only 'soul'.

Everyone has it enter their mind - because you ARE everyone! As for religious solipsism, I have no fucking idea! I would imagine that it is extending the concept of solipsism to include the fact that, since you are the only 'mind' in existence, you are therefore GOD! But I might be wrong there - it is a common extension of solipsism though.
