When would you decide to top yourself ?

Old age beckons. My parents in their mid 80s struggle on and are putting up a valiant last stand, bless them both!

Me? When I am decrepit I would like to have the right to just phase out with an overdose. I have had total anaesthetic twice now and frankly that has got to be better than almost any 'natural' alternative. Knock me out and then finish the job.

But not to be too macabre!

Let's not call it euthanasia, let's call it suicide. Would you want the right to pop off when you had had enough? And when do you think that might be?

As for pain, deal with it when it hurts, forget about it when it doesn't.

I actually want to be put in the freezer...no really, I'm actually serious. I figure the off chance of revival after being cryogenically preserved is worth the zero risk involved. Hell, it would be awesome to see the future.

You should find a copy of Heinlein's The Door Into Summer. The hero gets frozen twice, and is stored in two different locations simultaneously. (After that the plot gets a little tough to follow. )

I always liked that scene in Soylent Green where people went to that place to die a peaceful death at a time of their choosing. I think the viewer was supposed to see that as a bad thing, but I didn't. It seemed quite nice. Even the bit about being turned into food didn't bother me. On the contrary, it was must less wasteful than burying a body in the ground.

As far as my time...I'm not ready quite yet. But I can imagine a time when I might be. My health is not the greatest now. If it were to deteriorate markedly, I couldn't see the point in hanging on just to live life in pain and misery.

Besides, even if you are suffering terrible pain or whatever, it won't matter to you once it's all over (since there won't be a you for it (or anything else) to matter to).

I'm not allowed to checkout early ,seems it would upset some people who care for me .
I guess i find the big black nothing more seductive than" normal" people .The idea that life is precious that experience and the
made up concept of self must be clung to no matter what .
There is a biological urge to cling to the edge of life with tooth and claw ,but hell I have been in love before ,more than once,
and each time it felt like she/us was Everything .That wasn't true so i guess my biological brain is easily fooled.
Do you think that people need a reason to carry on ? or do we just do it and then try to make up reasons why and stuff to fill in the time?

Okay, I've deep-ended a few times, for various reasons that seemed good at the time. I've never noticed myself slipping in any direction. Everything felt right at the time. (In a manner of speaking.)
