The Aussie Rules thread

Post by JimC » Thu Mar 12, 2009 8:40 pm

I'm kicking of this thread which is to talk about the sublime game that is Aussie rules football, and in particular, to delight in the performance of the mighty Geelong Cats, premiers in '07, runners-up last year, and with a good chance of being in the finals this year.

GabrielJ is a Collingwood man. Known as the Magpies (or just the Pies), this club produces the most rabid set of fans known to mankind! I'm sure he will have lots to say...

Coincidentally, tonight is the grand final of the pre-season cup, and, you guessed it, the 2 contenders are the Cats and the Pies!

Go Cats!

Go Cats!

But the Aussie's don't rule football, I suggest, subjectively Brazil perhaps and in terms of club football then Manchester United or AC Milan.

What's with these Aussies - we give them 3 perfectly good kinds of football but they have to go and invent their own that no-one else can be arsed to play. :dono:

Why do they wear short shorts?
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

Cause we can.

The Pope was today knocked down at the start of Christmas mass by a woman who hopped over the barriers. The woman was said to be, "Mentally unstable."

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

There are several vital distinctions between a game of soccer, and a game of Aussie rules:

1. The round ball makes the game boring predictable, the oval ball adds unpredictable bounce and demands exquisite skill to manage.

2. We have the excitement of seeing many more than one or 2 goals a match.

3. There is virtually no crowd violence at an Aussie rules match (although there are certainly vast torrents of filthy, drunken verbal abuse). Soccer matches, however (in Oz as well) are quite famous for violence and hooliganism. The reason is simple; Aussie rules has so much violence on the field, that the crowd's bloodlust is satisfied vicariously...

All of those points apply equally well to Rugby Union and Rugby League. Games that people outside Oz care about. I did say there were 3 kinds of football before you went and made up one just for yourselves.

And there is a fair bit of both Rugby codes played in Oz as well (with little crowd violence as well), & I have enjoyed watching both at times, but rules is simply better... :levi:

 Stop compairing european football to ours ours is largely free of crowd violence and we have gestapo guards as pigs and security.

But we still get pissed and rowdy and we specialise in verbal abuse whilst drunk its called chanting. :drunk:
