BTW, one of the pitfalls in this debate is to accept the premise that:
(Hitler <> Christian) = (Hitler = Atheist)
But for him to be an atheist, he'd have had to have no religious/supernatural beliefs at all. And that does not seem to have been the case. So we might not know for sure what he was, but we have a better idea of what he was not.

Yeah - I agree there, too, KLR. I try always to avoid the 'C' word with Hitler / Nazism and hence my assertion that he was a "theist" (which I also try never to make unless to counter a claim that he was atheist).

Re: Adolf Hitler was an Atheist. Period.
ooops sorry.
Back on track...
Actions not Beliefs are the only factor that can be relied upon. Hitler acted like a xian in public. (A matter of record). So there are two options:
He was a christian. (of a flavour.)
Or he was using religion as kings and despots have done throughout the centuries, as a matter of populace manipulation.
Either way, he was not RATIONAL, which is more important than his personal belief system.

Somehow, I think I'd plump for option 'B'. The old Seneca quote is very apposite here:AshtonBlack wrote:ooops sorry.

"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful."
There are other questions that don't require that Hitler actually be a Christian at all for the answer to be damaging to Christianity. One is the extent to which Christianity fostered an anti-Semitic attitude in society generally. That might have rubbed off on Hitler even if he was never "religious".

Re: Adolf Hitler was an Atheist. Period.
Well, while a good point in an objective discussion, methinks it's not such a "good point" when dealing with Christians who simply assume/assert he was atheist and never think of his lack of rationality... I mean, when the fuck do Xians even connect in the slightest way with anything 'rational' in this 'area'?Gawdzilla wrote:Good point, as is clearly shown in Mein Kampf.AshtonBlack wrote:... Here's the thread for possible interest or in case that helps for context - I had to create it because the same fuck - "graeme" - kept derailing the only other thread I've ever created there.

Brett, I'm been to these dog shows before. You can only speak to the fence-sitters, the True Believerstm won't be reading what you say anyway. So make your points to the audience, not to the dork. Talk ABOUT his points, don't talk TO him. They hate that.BrettA wrote:Well, while a good point in an objective discussion, methinks it's not such a "good point" when dealing with Christians who simply assume/assert he was atheist and never think of his lack of rationality... That's the ones I like. I speak of them in the third person, and dissect their arguments like it was something that would make CSI faint.klr wrote:BrettA wrote:Well, while a good point in an objective discussion, methinks it's not such a "good point" when dealing with Christians who simply assume/assert he was atheist and never think of his lack of rationality... He looks to be just spoiling for a fight, pulling arguments and facts out of his arse just to obfuscate, derail and annoy. He is rude and arrogant to a point.
Re: Adolf Hitler was an Atheist. Period.
Absolutely and I think I do that. I'd even appreciate you taking a quick scan of the thread (< a page) and suggesting improvement if you have time. I do use a bit of sarcasm - like when he implied that Stalin and Hitler's atheists were dropping bombs in late 1959 - but I try to write for a wider audience. Lemme know wha'cha think if you look... I'm fine with any criticism at all and would love to improve :-).Gawdzilla wrote:Brett, I'm been to these dog shows before. I saw your point immediately, but he didn't of course (or didn't want to).BrettA wrote:Absolutely and I think I do that. Tell him he's welcome over here. We would like to hear out his arguments, and then rip them into tiny confetti-sized pieces.

OK, maybe leave out the last bit.

Something like this:
"Threre's a reason why thousands of tons of bombs, many dropped by atheists, have killed more people in the last fifty years than all the moslem terrorists have."
Yeah, and that would be because moslem terrorists don't have B-52s. Or regular air forces. However, remember that WWII saw more bombs dropped than any time since, and the Americans and English dropped the most of them. (Which, of course, is why graeme used a 50 year window instead of a sixty year window.)
