Kim Jong-il Threatens Fresh Nuclear Test
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has warned of a fresh nuclear test if the U.S. and the international community intensify sanctions, Open Radio for North Korea said Saturday.
Kim told party and military leaders in Wonsan, Gangwon Province on Aug. 26, "You should be determined to conduct a third and more powerful nuclear test if the U.S. intensifies sanctions without dialogue" with the North, ORNK reported.
The broadcaster speculated that although Kim did not specify, a "more powerful" nuclear test would mean a test using enriched uranium.
The broadcaster quoted Kim as adding that six-party talks could resume premised on bilateral talks with Washington.
North Korea conducted nuclear tests in October 2006 and May 2009, using plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel rods. But on Sept. 4 this year it said uranium enrichment has "entered the final stage."
Quoting a North Korean source, the broadcaster speculated that a third nuclear test would highly likely be conducted between Sept. 20, which marks the official end of a "150-day struggle" that saw many North Koreans pressed into agricultural labor, and Oct. 10, the anniversary of the North Korean Workers' Party.
