There have been many reports of travellers, including Australians, being forced to allow US border officers to open up their phones, which are checked for political stuff. They are then refused entry...

These are some of the tips immigration lawyers say could help when facing scrutiny from US border security.

As the Trump administration continues its immigration crackdown, fears have been growing about "enhanced vetting" at airports.

I've been wondering what they do about international travelers, coming through Canada, having some (legal for recreation) weed and forgetting some in their luggage on the way to the next country.

'ICE Detains U.S. Army Interpreter at Routine Asylum Hearing'

ICE agents arrested a former interpreter for the U.S. Army after he attended his asylum hearing in San Diego.

The man, who reportedly risked his life to aid American troops in Afghanistan for three years, was placed in handcuffs by a pair of immigration officers who concealed their faces with neck gaiters.

His arrest was captured on camera, with the agents moving to cuff him as soon as he walked out of a hearing on the fourth floor of a downtown courthouse, the Times of San Diego reported.

“Yeah, get him,” one agent says to another. “Take him. Go ahead, take him.”

The former interpreter appeared shocked by what was playing out.

“I came here to make a better life,” the man pleaded in the clip. “I didn’t know that this would happen… I worked with the U.S. military. I worked in a very dangerous part of Afghanistan with the U.S. military.”

Attorney Brian McGoldrick asked that his client’s name be kept anonymous because he will likely face persecution by the Taliban if he is ultimately deported to Afghanistan. McGoldrick told the Times that the man was a translator for American troops but also assisted the U.S. Army logistically on the ground in a war zone.

How soon till Trump pardons them?

Victim Omar Guandique was too emotional to speak with News4 as he left court on Thursday, video shows. Last year at his home, after weeks in the hospital, he showed us the wounds from three bullets Cornett fired into his body. His friend and colleague also was shot and badly injured.

The gunfire came after Cornett targeted the men as they drove along Interstate 95 and tracked them to a gas station. He asked them where they were from and how long they had been in the country. Then he opened fire.

The men are pleased by the life sentence Cornett received, Guandique’s brother Kevin Laren said.

“On the one hand, it broke us seriously, because of the injuries suffered by my brother. But we are happy because justice prevailed, which is what we wanted. A crime like this can’t go unpunished,” he said in Spanish.

Cornett pleaded guilty in April to six charges. An aggravated malicious wounding charge carried a possible life sentence.

Commonwealth’s Attorney for Spotsylvania County Ryan Mehaffey sought the maximum sentence.

“Mr. Cornett and his actions just caused terrible fear and horror in the Hispanic community in Spotsylvania, and he acted out of what can only be described as extreme hatred,” he said.

Guandique told the judge that with his injuries, he can’t do the work he previously did to support his family. Victim Jesus Martinez is still undergoing surgeries.

"Ding-dong ditch" shooting suspect was "waiting in the shadows," police say

The man charged in the deadly shooting of an 11-year-old Texas boy was "waiting in the shadows" as the child and his cousin played a "ding-dong ditch" prank on his Houston home, police said. The suspect followed the boys as they ran away before he opened fire, according to Houston Police Sgt. Michael Cass, the lead detective on the case.

Cass told CBS News the suspect was "waiting in the shadows in his own side yard behind a fence" after the boy and his cousin knocked on his door Saturday night and ran away.
