Trump on China: "They made a trillion dollars with Biden selling us stuff. Much of it we don't need. Somebody said, 'oh, the shelves are gonna be open.' Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more."

How dare they 'sell us stuff'!! But isn't the problem 'we made a trillion dollars with Biden by buying ourselves stuff'? Does Mr Trump want the US to make less dollars by selling stuff to US consumers more cheaply, or does he want to make less dollars by making it more expensive for US consumers to buy stuff? The man should really decide which side of the 'we need to make less dollars' fence he's sitting on - and whether that fence is likely to bear his weight.

Reminds me of that Star Trek NG episode 'chain of command' where Picard is psychologically pressured into saying there are 5 lights when there are only 4.

Yes the same reference came to mind for me when I was writing that post. However Picard was under physical and mental duress, while Trump expects people to just accept his alternate reality because he's put it forward, as if his whims should automatically dictate what people think and believe. It works for the MAGA true believers and if it doesn't work for you, you're unpatriotic at best, and likely a communist.

It's the gaslighting of the public/world by a pathological confabulist - one who fills in the gaps and inconsistences in his own narratives with fabrications that he believes are true, or that he thinks others should believe to be true.

We also have to remember that gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse.

Blitzer begins by noting how American conservatives have admired El Salvadorian president Nakib Bukele's crackdown on gang members. His policy of mass imprisonment has been successful against gang control that had reigned in much of the country.

"Right-wing ideologues have long fantasized about the prospect of mass self-deportation: the idea is that, if the government is sufficiently hostile to immigrants, they will feel that they have no choice but to leave the country. The Trump Administration is attempting something far more radical. In a campaign reminiscent of Bukele’s “state of exception,” it has moved to suspend the rule of law; this is as much an attack on immigrants as it is a fever dream of untrammelled power."

"Trump has never been much deterred by either the human or the material consequences of his policies, as long as they send a political message. During Joe Biden’s Presidency, more than a million migrants came to the U.S. through a legal pathway called parole, which granted them temporary entry so that they could apply for a more lasting status. Trump has now tried to revoke their parole, plunging them into legal limbo and potentially creating a new population of people bound to become undocumented. The author is convinced that the Trump strategy is to deliberately force a constitutional crisis over the president's authority. Trump seems to feel that the courts will not ultimately limit a president's ability to deport targeted immigrants.
