TV guest: Trump is adjusting tariffs like a thermostat.

Well, get that thermostat away from him. Give him something that beeps and looks like it does something.

FFS reallllly ...the guy has no shame...

> Trump guards his image closely. In January 2025, before his inauguration, he released a portrait that was variously described by critics as serious or ominous, and seemed to reference his 2023 mugshot.
>
> That image was taken after he was charged with attempting to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden in the state of Georgia – a charge Trump denied.
>
> After Trump’s criticism of Boardman, his envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed **the White House had been sent a new work from Moscow,** which was a gift from Vladimir Putin. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described it as a “personal gift”.
>
> Witkoff described the picture as a “beautiful portrait” by a “leading Russian artist”.

Trump has his Mug Shot hanging in the entrance to the Oval Office so everyone entering sees it :{D
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Trump closes loophole used by American shoppers to buy Chinese goods tariff-free
While President Donald Trump was levying massive tariffs on goods from around the world this week, he also moved to pinch off a popular trade loophole that allows American shoppers to buy low-cost goods directly from retailers in China and Hong Kong.

Popular e-commerce companies, including giants Shein and Temu, use the so-called "de minimis" exemption to ship tens of millions of packages — everything from end tables and lamps to shoes and underwear — to U.S. consumers every year.

So long as each individual package is worth $800 or less, they aren't required to pay import fees or go through typical customs inspections. But under an executive order signed by Trump Wednesday, that loophole will close on May 2.

These lower-value shipments will now face a tariff of 30% of the "value of the postal item containing goods for merchandise" with a minimum fee that will eventually rise to $50....
Anti free-trade of course, and it'll hit those with the least to spend hardest, but not a bad thing from a carbon perspective at least.

Oh boy, I've been retired over 5 years, I can't wait for those little screws. It will be 800 dollars for safety bifocals, though, Mr Lutnick.

Tariffs Work — and President Trump’s First Term Proves It
Despite the rhetoric from politicians and the media, studies have repeatedly shown tariffs are an effective tool for achieving economic and strategic objectives — just as they did in President Trump’s first term.

A 2024 study on the effects of President Trump’s tariffs in his first term found that they “strengthened the U.S. economy” and “led to significant reshoring” in industries like manufacturing and steel production.

A 2023 report by the U.S. International Trade Commission — which analyzed the effects of President Trump’s Section 232 and 301 tariffs on more than $300 billion of U.S. imports — found the tariffs reduced imports from China, effectively stimulated more U.S. production of the affected goods, and had very minor effects on downstream prices.

Yeah but it's more than washing machines and steel. The logic that it worked once so it will work again does not follow.

It’s actually sound logic, it’s just not foolproof. But what is?

The problem I have with tariffs insofar as I understand them is that with the exception of say China, we stand to hurt our allies and relationships for relatively little in return.

And, as they're basically a purchase tax, they'll hurt those with the least to spend. Some talking heads are saying that investors are moving in to US govt bonds, which will bring down interest rates and the deficit. Others are saying that it'll increase inflation, depressing domestic production and put increasing pressure on small to medium sized business. Seems even the talking heads don't really know what's going on.

Aye, they want to eliminate social safety nets and raise prices while cutting jobs. It might be time to invest in prisons. :dunno:

Trump has to first insult Eurooe, raise tariffs and act tough. And the offer he was looking for...was there all along.
But now he can claim it.

Have any countries approached Trump to ease up? Or are they all truly better off with his buffoonery?
