Why should any member of Congress vote in favor of a continuing resolution to fund government services that are no longer continuing?

Why should any member of Congress vote to give Trump and Musk a trillion dollars and then let them decide how to spend it — or not spend it?

Why should Congress give Trump and Musk a blank check to continue their pillage?
The real choice congressional Democrats face today is not between a continuing resolution that allows the government to function normally or a government shutdown. Under Trump and Musk, the government is not functioning normally. It is not continuing. It is already shutting down.

Today’s real choice is between a continuing resolution that gives Trump and Musk free rein to decide what government services they want to continue and what services they want to shut down — or demanding that Trump and Musk stop usurping the power of Congress, as a condition for keeping the government funded.
The spineless Republicans will not say this publicly. So Democrats must — and Democrats must insist on budget language that holds Trump and Musk accountable.

The House’s Republican-drafted budget resolution isn’t contingent on Trump observing existing laws. It does not instruct the president to stop Musk from riding roughshod over the federal government.

The notion of carefully wrought bullshit involves, then, a certain inner strain. Thoughtful attention to detail requires discipline and objectivity. It entails accepting standards and limitations that forbid the indulgence of impulse or whim. It is this selflessness that, in connection with bullshit, strikes us as inapposite. But in fact it is not out of the question at all. EPA doing great things:
Promising to drive “a dagger through the heart of climate-change religion,” Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin on Wednesday outlined plans for an aggressive rollback of environmental regulations.

In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece and an EPA news release, Zeldin announced that he intends to reconsider more than a dozen core EPA rules and regulations, including those pertaining to emissions standards for vehicles, pollution from power plants and the finding that provides the scientific basis for addressing climate change.


“Today marks the death of the Green New Scam,” Zeldin wrote in The Wall Street Journal, arguing that his deregulation plan would create an environment where “businesses can thrive and infrastructure can be built.” He added that he wants to reassess rules that, in his view, “throttled oil and gas production and unfairly targeted coal-fired power plants,” and suggested that his proposed actions would roll back “trillions of dollars in regulatory costs.”

The EPA announced that it will revisit water pollution limits for coal plants, air quality standards for small particles and the mandatory reporting of greenhouse gas emissions by large emitters like oil and gas companies, among other rules.

Still some push-back from the judicial branch (not including the Supreme Court for the most part). The executive order in question is clearly unconstitutional--it's using the power of the government to punish an entity for actions that are personally objectionable to the president in power i.e. 'retribution.'

'Perkins Coie Gets Temporary Restraining Order Against Trump’s Punitive Executive Order'

Yesterday, Perkins Coie filed a lawsuit to “to declare the [Executive Order targeting the firm] unlawful and to enjoin its implementation.” Today, Judge Beryl Howell held a held an hour-and-a-half-long hour hearing on the firm’s request for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) on sections 1, 3, and 5 of the Order. After interrogating both sides, Howell issued the TRO. (Available here.)

Howell found there was a likelihood Perkins Coie would succeed on the merits, specifically noting the Order is unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and retaliation in violation of the First Amendment. She writes the “retaliatory animus” is clear from both the EO and related fact sheet. “This is viewpoint discrimination plain and simple,” Howell wrote.

There was also a likely violation of the firm’s due process rights, noting the order as creates a “badge of infamy,” and no process was given to the firm. Howell also found the EO was not narrowly tailored and, throughout the hearing, hammered on the thousands of Perkins Coie employees — many of them in administrative or clerical roles — impacted by the EO.

While the government attorney (Chad Mizelle, chief of staff to Attorney General Pam Bondi, and husband to district court judge Kathryn Mizelle) repeatedly argued the harms to the firm were purely speculative, as specific guidance on the application of the EO has not yet been issued. But Perkins Coie’s attorney, Williams & Connolly partner Dane Butswinkas, noted the firm has lost clients every day since the EO was issued and Perkins Coie attorneys were prevented from doing their jobs because government attorneys have already canceled meetings with firm lawyers in order to comply with the Order. Butswinkas said, “[The EO] truly is life-threatening. It will spell the end of the law firm.”

[Howell] noted the EO was an effort to intimidate the legal profession from taking cases and positions disfavored by the administration, and the chilling effect on the legal system is real.

I'm confused. Why did Trump not ask the astronauts to bring back some minerals from space? Now they get a free ride.

Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore thought they were taking off for a couple weeks in space. Their mission was to test Boeing’s new Starliner spacecraft and then head home. It didn’t go as planned. Nine months later, the NASA astronauts will finally return to Earth from the International Space Station next week if there are no other hitches.

Their relief is scheduled to launch on a SpaceX ship tonight (though weather may change the plan) and arrive at the space station on Saturday. In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain how Williams and Wilmore got stuck in orbit for so long — and why NASA decided not to bring them back sooner.

In January, President Trump and Elon Musk opened up a new debate about NASA’s plans. They accused the Biden administration of having callously abandoned Williams and Wilmore. Now the president asked Musk to go rescue them as soon as possible. Musk later added that he had offered to bring the astronauts home months earlier but that NASA had turned him down to avoid helping a Trump ally.

But it’s unknown whom Musk spoke to or what exactly he offered. Musk avoids talking to reporters, and NASA officials have sidestepped questions about him. They say they chose the plan that made the most sense.

To many, an unexpected nine-month layover in orbit sounds like a business trip gone horribly wrong. But astronauts live to go to space, and they don’t get many chances.
